Do you have to attend inset days even if they are scheduled for your non working days?

No, as long as you do a proportional number of insets eg 5 I sets a year and you are 0.6fte you do three.

Any more and you should be paid.

Last year my school gave me Fridays off so I didn't attend any on those days. Luckily the Monday ones made up my 0.6.

But they can't MAKE you as they're not paying you for that day.

Private school here too. I'm quite new at this school. I was in state before where you went to the amount that equalled your working time (eg 0.6 or whatever) so this is really annoying.

But you work part-time. You could well have another job on the days you don't work, or caring commitments with children or elderly parents. Lots of people do. That's bonkers.

It means I have to pay for childcare (my kids are at the school I work at) and also pay for doggy daycare as the dog is looked after by me st home on these days. It costs me £80 per day in total.

You need to check your contract.

Private schools often industry in this, and attendance at parents evenings, open evenings etc on non working days and it's contracted.

I checked this out with HR, you cannot be required to work on a day that you do not usually work (it could be that you have another job then). You can only required to do inset days on a day that you usually work, if they ask you to do another day this must be with pay for time off in lieu. In practice for me my headteacher always forgets I don’t work Mondays! If it’s a Monday inset of the beginning of the year I do this as a goodwill gesture, because he is good at letting me have time off at medical appointments for my child. When there are others Monday inset days I don’t do them. Why don’t you contact HR and get the position clarified as I did, that way you have back up when you’re talking to headteacher about this. For teachers our p&c are not pro rata inset days

We have a directed time budget spreadsheet and part timers have to do the right percentage of hours. If a part timer at my school wasn’t doing INSETs because they fell on a non-working day then they would be expected to make up the directed time elsewhere by attending more than their fair share of meetings/parents evenings etc.

If you work on inset days, that are on days that are not your normal working days, you should be paid for it. I queried it with new headteacher just over a year ago, as she thought part time teachers had to do a percentage of inset days that matches their working week e.g 0.6 but she was wrong. I provided proof from my union and now I get paid for inset days I work!

It should be detailed in your contract if you work at a private school. In the state sector, I've only ever attended ones on my contracted days.

If they are asking you to attend school on your day off you need to be paid. If that is not happening - involve the unions
