Hi, I'm looking to start a level 2 course next September at college when all my children are in school Grin but should I try and find a volunteer position at a school in the meantime? On the days I'm currently free. Or is this not even a thing? Any help is hugely appreciated.

I would definitely volunteer, so useful to get practical experience. When a friend was looking to train I suggested she learnt some Makaton and our local special school offered a course in different ways children with special needs can be supported in their communication. Her first job after training was with a child who needed makaton and completing the course helped her get the job.

I too would echo the advice about volunteering. If you've not worked in a school before it will give you a good idea about how the school operates and what the role of TA is like. Then when it comes to doing your qualifications you will have real-life experience and knowledge to show to your tutor.
