My school says regarding cover lessons.

When I do a cover I will always tell the students at the start of the class that the work needs to be shown, complete, to the teacher at the start of their next lesson and that they should be able to finish it in the lesson but will have to do so for homework if they waste the lesson time.

When my own lessons are covered the work tends to be finished to a decent standard by all the students who were present so I assume my colleagues who cover are saying similar things.

What's your school's reasoning, OP?

I suppose it sends the message that you can fuck about in the lesson and do the work at home.

I use break/lunch to complete, redo inadequate work but it's labour intensive with a new class until they realise you mean it.

I don't really believe in homework, but have got myself sorted now. I issue a booklet of self marking vocab/recap quiz questions every half term. We go through them at the beginning of the lesson. I just walk round and record not attempted. Very few detentions now.

I'm not a huge fan of finish off at home homework but -meh- who cares? Parents expect homework , on the whole, and wouldn't query this. Just because something wasn't finished in class doesn't mean it was 'inadequately' done or a student wasn't working hard enough in every case, of course.

On thing I wouldn't do , however, unless urgent, is set homework when I have set cover or mark the work students did while I wasn't there (unless it is an assessment)

I wouldn’t set homework on a cover lesson, nor would I actually set them work that they really needed to do (unless I was setting a test). A shedload of questions reviewing stuff that they have already done is my standard cover lesson.

Or everyone's favourite English cover : a film.(although talking of diktats we were recently told our cover staff think this is 'unsuitable cover'. What on earth is wrong with our cover teachers? Are they masochists??)

I would love a cover lesson that was watching a film! I had an English cover the other week that was analysing use of language in a section of Romeo and Juliet. Did not have the foggiest what it was on about and would have much rather watched Leo DiCaprio for an hour!

I don't set 'complete for homework' for cover because it sends the message that students can mess about in class and then do the work later (which causes issues for cover staff).

I set tasks, want the work in at the end of the lesson and any that aren't up to standard get completed in detention (along with any who misbehave for the cover teacher)
