After 10 years of TA work I’ve decided to apply to do a primary teaching degree. Tomorrow I’m completing the last part of the application, the personal statement. I’ve seen the tips from UCAS but just wondering if anyone has any tips. I really want this.

Becauss you don't have a massive word count focus on the reasons why you want to teach and what you have learned in your experience as a TA.

I applied and have accepted a place for Primary Teaching starting September.

I applied for Secondary, so it was slightly different as I was also addressing why I wanted to teach a particular subject.

I would say key points to cover:

-Why you have decided you want to be a teacher?
-Why you want to teach primary especially? (What appeals about this age group).
-Your work experience and the strengths you will bring to the role.

You will probably find that this fills most of the word count! However, if you have any further space, you could also mention areas of the curriculum where you might be especially strong if this is not obvious from your qualifications etc. If you feel you might have any weaknesses, you could also say what you would do to address these!

Remember, you will be interviewed before being offered a place, so your PS doesn't have to cover everything you might want to say to an admissions tutor. You're aiming to give them a sense of who you are, and why you have the potential to become a good teacher. The word count fills up really quickly, so be prepared to focus in on key points, rather than trying to say everything!

Also, I know it's probably obvious but make sure your spelling and grammar are really strong, and you write in a formal/professional tone!

Good Luck, and join us on the PGCE applicants thread as well if you want!

Thanks so much. I've completed it and am now waiting for the reference from my boss. Exciting but scary times! Eeeekkkk
