Can you recommend any great, low maintenance games for wet play / golden time please... Games that don't have too many pieces would be ideal.

What age-group?

My Y4s love Twister, but we're lucky to have the space for two mats.
Top Trumps and BrainBox are also popular and still playable if (when) some of the cards go missing.

Lots of pieces, but if you can hold of second hand Lego it is usually a winner.

What age for games? Orchard toys ones are fab

Marble run is popular with mine, the pieces are pretty large. And lots of scrap paper, colouring pencils, stapler, sellotape and glue for making endless little books.
