Pay for assistant head

Long story but will try to be brief. Was a deputy headteacher for eleven years. Left teaching for a year due to bully of a new headteacher. Went back to teaching as supply teacher for 2 years. Got permanent job as class teacher. Received TLR 2 for SENCO role in same school in Sept 2017. Same school but now been given assistant head. Do I have to begin at L1 again or do I resume L5 (post is described as (L1-5) due to my previous experience?

You'll have to negotiate with the headteacher. Pay portability has gone but that theoretically means that they can pay you what they think you are worth (and what they can afford...).

Negotiate for L5. L1 seems insultingly low for an AH role. I earn more as a Head of Department with a lower tier TLR and UPS 2. Is it a very small school?

It must be a very small primary if the AH scale is L1-L5.
