Moving from Primary to Secondary

I've been a primary teacher for many years, the majority as a specialist and also taught in a tertiary settling. Most of my experience has been international and in the UK in independent sector but have QTS. My qualification is BEd with subject specific major . I would like to move into secondary.
What additional qualifications do I need ?

As you can see from above , English isn't the speciality !

I don't think you need any additional qualifications.
I have 3 teaching colleagues in my Maths department who have a B Ed, they just applied for the job and were the best candidates on the day. They don't teach A Level, just up to GCSE, and mostly foundation classes.

Are there many jobs going for art in secondary schools near you, or in an area you are interested in moving to? That's the next step in deciding if it's feasible.

If you see a job you fancy, apply for it and see what they say. Don't get your hopes up for getting the first one you apply for, but it would give you a better idea of whether there's anything more they want you to do in order to consider you.

I thought you could easily go from secondary to primary, but I thought in reverse it's not as easy. Maybe you need secondary QTS but I've not really got a clue.

We are currently using art teachers from our secondary MAT members as our primary ppa cover to deliver art. Not enough work for them in the secondaries, some are being laid off.

Check what your situation is locally. Our secondaries are cutting arts subjects.

You're qualified to teach in secondary. I was under the impression that there are more art teachers than jobs in most areas, bit maybe that's not the case now.

Essentially, you need to be able to convince a prospective employer that you have the adequate knowledge of the curriculum, can control and motivate classes of teenagers and are worth the money. Unless you're willing to take a pay cut, you will be a lot more expensive than an NQT with recent, but limited, GCSE and A' Level experience.

I work in an academy with 1200 students. We have one art teacher.
Jobs are scarce.

Wowers I'm really shocked to hear jobs are thin in on the ground in the UK . This somewhat blows my plans to transition whilst abroad and return to a role in England.
Local international school of 2500 students has an art department of 9.5.

Local secondary school recently made the art and ict teachers go 0.6 or redundant!

One of each subject. Both took the redundancy

I dont know how much of a new change it is. I attended a secondary of about 1200 20 years ago and we had only two art teachers.

Our Art department is shrinking - I think it's nationwide.
