Just trying to see if what my school expects is too much or the norm.

How many lessons do you teach?
How many duties?
How many lesson obs/pop ins do you have to do?

Would love to hear what you have.

Hi, although I'm not in the role now (resigned two years ago and moved to Head of Department instead in another school due to workload), I was Head on English with other whole school responsibility (L14-L18). We had a 25 lesson timetable and I taught 15/16 lessons a week. I also had two weekly lunchtime duties and 1 weekly breaktime duty. We were an academy and often had afters hook meetings until late (once sponsor arrived) - often until 7.30. Within my free period, I usually had 4 data meetings a week with various other members of leadership who were above me. I also popped I'm and out of lessons as often as I could. A large proportion of frees were dealing with HR issues from unhappy staff or managing pupil behaviour around the department. We had an absolutely extortionate amount of paperwork too (progression plans, half termly mega in depth data analysis, strategy plans, two year long term management vision plans etc). I'm now Head of English in another school, get five frees a week and am usually give an afternoon off every half term to complete leadership paperwork. We also (all staff) get an afternoon for report writing.

I'm a HOD on leadership scale. Six (out of 25) frees per week. That's three more than a full time, mainscale teacher.

So 12 ppa a fortnight, do you have duties and observations to do as well or is it in that time?

HoD here too, two extra frees a fortnight (HoD for a core subject has a few more, even though they have double the TLR allowance and a second in dept... but that's another issue!) DH is SLT and is expected to to duty for 20 mins every lunchtime and is on about 50% timetable

Duties are on top of that - at break and after school. Observations etc need to happen during my 'frees'.

So it looks like 50% teaching on average as leadership.

I think when you add the other expectations that are not teaching, there is very little time to lead and think strategically and long plan.

Very hard to find the balance.

Am HOF in a through school 2-16. I teach 28 periods out of 40, plus 2 lunchtime clubs, 2 duties, 4 before school clubs and and an afterschool GCSE course. I also organise and plan all whole school events such as Carol service and speech day. I manage 12 part time/visiting staff as well. I am already exhausted and it's only week 2... Sad
