Pay scale movement for new job

Hi,
I've just found out I've been offered a job for september. It's my first full time job in the state sector. My application form said MP4 was my pay scale as I've done supply work for the county for the last two academic years before and after having my DC so very ad hoc. Before that I was in the independent sector and so different pay scale. My offer letter for the job says MP4 but would it be unreasonable of me to email and ask if it could be MP5? Is it cheeky to do post interview? We didn't discuss money at interview because I was a coward and didn't bring it up... But equally I really want this job and there aren't other good job shares like this around so don't want to rock the boat too much!

I think once you have accepted a contract, that's it. Imagine they now come back to you and try to negotiate it down to M1.

I thought that having worked in the indie sector, you would know how to negotiate.

Well the cut off date for resignations is this week, so if you feel that you want to wait and see what is advertised in the next couple of weeks then turn the job down. If you live in an area where job shares are hens teeth and you like the school then take it.

The porting of pay has gone in the state sector.

I think the time to raise it was on the day. You can ask but don't be surprised if they say no. Sadly your 'cost' may have been a factor in your appointment.

You need to contact them now and ask. I know it's awkward.
I was offered a job on the phone earlier this week. I didn't bring pay up at interview but when they called to offer me the job I just said that I knew it was awkward but could we discuss pay and straight away they said they would carry on my pay as I'd worked hard for it and they'd factored it in when they offered me the job.

I accepted a job and stupidly thought it was outer London pay. I emailed and explained that due to my massive commuting costs that was a big problem and would they put me up a band. They did! I worded it carefully and it was about 5 years ago.

There has been no pay portability in teaching now for a while.

A lot of schools are still offering pay portability though. Particularly if they are in a teacher shortage area or subject.

I think as you have never had a 'proper' job in the state sector before you are lucky they have put you on M4. They could have just offered it to you on M1, especially given how hideously tight all the budgets are now. I would take it as it is.
