secondary -what to request for next year.

As we approach the final half term, HoD has asked for our preferences for what we would like to teach next year. Obviously, there are no guarantees but they will try to accommodate where possible.

I currently teach all year groups (7-13) in a core subject. However, this also means that I do every parents eve, every set of reports etc.

I am.considering possible having a break from teaching A-level and just request 7-11. Would I be barmy to do that? I would like to progress in the future so I don't want to limit my experience too much.

What would your wish list be?

Personally, I would never drop A Level. If I was dropping a year this year it would be year 9. Because our current year 8 are really hard work! I'd also consider losing one GCSE year or one A Level year (as then you're still teaching that course). I'm part time in a core subject at the moment and have one class in each KS.

Yes, I think you're right - our Y8 are also hardwork so I may consider not having Y9

I wouldn't drop A level but would ask for just yr 12 or yr 13. Similarly ask for repeat classes in the same year rather than a class in every year for more efficiency. Less prep as you can reuse lessons, fewer parents nights and report deadlines (although more reports at one time of course).

Definitely do not drop KS5.

Are all classes in a given year group timetabled together? If not, consider asking for two groups in one year. Considerably less planning.

I wouldn't drop A level, but that's because I prefer my older groups. Y7/8 on the other hand bore me if I'm honest. I need to have a think about who I'm going to teach next year as our GCSE/A level groups are big, so I can see me dropping a fair bit of KS3 actually.

I adore teaching A level and would happily only teach KS5 if I could but that's a personal choice. You may be better off teaching more classes in the same year group to cut down on parents evening etc. Taking a balance of exam classes might help too, like a year 10 group you'll see through but no year 11. At the end of the day though, ask for the year groups you love teaching. For me that's the older ones but I understand others love KS3
