Supply in my children's school

Hi everyone,

The head at my children's school has been making noises for the past six months about inviting me in to do some supply cover. I completed all the paperwork around Christmas time and I have been offered my first day on Thursday!

I am hoping at some point in the future to apply for a part-time teaching job there if one were to become available at the right time. So it's really important to me that I make a great first impression.

I have taught supply before but only in the school that I have taught at for the past ten years and therefore I know all of their routines, policies etc like the back of my hand. I obviously know this school a bit because my kids go there but I'm still feeling a little out of my depth and feel like I need to go prepared.

So far I'm thinking of asking for their behaviour policy and marking policy in advance so I can familiarise myself with them. Also is it reasonable to ask to meet the teacher whose class I'm covering in advance so that she can brief me a bit? I think I want to ask her about the plan for the day, seating arrangements, classroom routines, SEN etc. It's a one-form-entry school so I'm not entirely sure if there will be anyone else I might be able to ask on the day.

Also, I'm not sure how to introduce myself to the children. Obviously some of them might know me as my kids' mum, and some may know me by my name. I'm concerned that some may think I'm going to be super-soft because I'm a parent, and perhaps try to take advantage. I plan to set out behaviour expectations from the outset but not quite sure how to pitch it.

I'm sure I'm probably massively overthinking this but I want to make sure I get it right! It's been a long time since I started afresh at a new school!

It makes sense to ask the class teacher if there is anything they want you to cover, and anything you need to be aware of about any of the dc in the class - from medical alerts to SEN/D, but I think, if you are doing 1 day, it might be a bit OTT to start trawling through policies.

Will there be a TA in the class?
