I have actively discouraged my DD from becoming a teacher - it's a shame because she would be an excellent teacher and, up until about 5 years ago, I loved my job.

The current expectations in primary teaching are not sustainable long term and, in my experience, are made worse by poor management by individual's who jump at every new poorly thought out initiative and pass their stress down to the teachers in the classroom.

Toomuchtvandsocialmedia - I've done exactly the same with my dd - she'd be an amazing primary teacher too but the way that education is heading I'm struggling to recommend it to anyone!

So sad, a wonderful person out our children's school was one of these statistics. If teachers are under this pressure and stress what is this saying to our children - these are they're role models. Teachers shouldn't be under this stress and pressure and nor should in turn our children.

I trained as a primary school teacher many moons ago though my career went in a different direction. I wouldn't dream of teaching now - no thanks.

Sadly I'm not surprised. I know of very few happy teachers. Those that are seem to be either SLT (I know the head job is stressful), or have no d pendants and therefore the time and willingness to give their lives to the school.

I've moved into Specialist teaching with teenagers - I can't believe how much less stressful it is than working in a primary school.

I'm gatecrashing this post as I'm not a teacher - it's come up in active threads. Apologies if that's not allowed!

As a parent, I think this is appalling and am so worried about the stresses teachers are under. Is there anything parents can actually do? My MP is conservative so doubt they will be interested.

My son has decided to go into primary teaching. I'm delighted. It is still my career and even on the tough days I couldn't imagine doing anything else.
