Wow! We have something like 12 so far leaving in July but 10 in May is mental. Half of the ones leaving our school are either going abroad, into the private sector or are leaving teaching entirely. It's proving difficult to line up replacements too. We're a really good school with a supportive HT and SLT and well behaved kids. If we can't recruit then I dread to think how difficult it is for other schools to get teachers.

I think teachers are under so much stress.

Lots leaving at dd's school in July inc two heads of dept. School are already struggling to recruit. They can't find science teachers.

Dd says her english teacher threw a pen across the room one lesson this week and then sat on the floor crying and said she was going to quit.

You know it's bad when people can't keep their gameface on in front of the children.
Never mind, new cannon fodder on the way in July and the government continuously reassure the general population that there isn't a problem, so that must be true.

My maths department, which historically has had very little turnover is losing 4 of 10 in July.

Leaving in May is bad though, it suggests that they only hung on for their Y11s. The last term is the easiest one! (Except for me who has no gained time this year).

We've got three off sick in our dept and can't get any specialists in replace them at all! All the supply teachers must be off on cheap holidays.

We had 21 leave last July. 6 of us had no job to go to, just got out.

Same here in a primary. All the SLT will have left by the end of the academic year. Three teachers to recruit.

Huge respect to anyone hanging in there. I left after nearly twenty years of secondary teaching.
When I tell people they always assume it was the behaviour of naughty kids that pushed me to the brink! Um no. It was the constant new policies and the demand tried meet targets (no matter how bonkers!) It was the demand we plan, mark, do and record intervention, report, liaise, train, moderate, peer observe, do duties, run extra clubs, analyse data and deal with child protection and other issues all outside of our teaching time.
If any of you are maintaining any joy in your work, and remember the point of education is supposed to the about the child not OFSTED, then I salute you.

Loads leaving at my school too. I'd probably join them if I could think of anything else I could do. Agree it is absolutely not the kids, it's all the other rubbish.

Yup. Deputy head left Spring half term. SENCo left Easter. KS1 leader leaving in July. Deputy head was also KS2 leader. Of course we are not without leadership or a SENCo, all the thrashers had been at the school 8+ years before they left. I have a thread called It's all a bit shit on here!

I am an LSA. A HLTA is leaving next week. No other TA's have handed in their notice ...... yet.

Look at the frequent responses on MN. Teachers are whiney, petty babysitters who have short hours and long holidays and have no experience of the real world as they have spent their whole life in school.
The general public believe we can't hack it because we are incompetent and inadequate.
They won't see a problem as long as schools stagger along, patching up the holes and playing a merry tune to cover up the sound of the whole ship going down. It will take a complete meltdown to enable them to see that we've been the ones telling the truth for years.

I think the public that care are being torn in so many direction at once - they see the crisis in schools, in the NHS, in welfare as well as the growing refugee crisis - we have finite energy and resources, where do we fight first? That's even before we start thinking about the other major issues of terrorism, climate change, antibiotic resistance and pandemic risks.

On your point though, it's a terrible situation being replicated nationwide.

I wondered into this because it was on the active page, I'm not a teacher I'm a HCP but I just wanted to say you all do a fantastic job - I couldn't do what you do. It might seem like the public aren't behind you at times but a lot of us are and we are forever grateful for what you do; educating our children and our future. Thankyou.

Are these schools where staff are leaving at half terms all academies? We still have the three set deadlines for giving notice and can only leave at the end of each term (barring maternity leave or sickness) in our local authority.

Loads leaving here too. Staff morale is so low. I'm hoping that by this time next year, I will also be in my final term of teaching- just need to get things lined up so I'm ready to start a new career.

I work in an Ofsted outstanding in a leafy suburb. Lovely kids, but we can't get HoD for lots of posts. Not enough applicants.
