I qualified in secondary many moons ago and due to DCS have been working as a primary TA for a couple of years now. Mostly I do interventions, bits of cover here and there. My HT has offered to put me into primary as a teacher if I'm interested but what would it actually entail wrt formally retraining? And can you set yourself as KS1/KS2 or do you have to accept your HT can move you wherever?

No retraining required at all - you just have to find a HT prepared to employ you. Same if you go the other way. And yes, in theory your head can send you anywhere from Reception to year 6, although they would have to be pretty desperate to send someone who was settled in upper KS2 to Reception. I've worked with plenty of people over the years who've made a similar move, often following DC.

Whether you'd feel confident/competent to teach primary without any additional training is another matter. And last thing I heard, the return to teaching courses were axed in the cuts a few years ago, so you might struggle to find a conversion course to go on. Best thing would be to think about the training/support you think you'd need and then chat to your Head. (As a primary maths specialist, I'm quite passionate about the importance to decent training to teach primary maths - not because the content itself is difficult, but explaining it clearly can be.)

Thank you toomuchicecream I started looking into it all and they're crying out for my subject in secondary so I think I'll follow that along. I think I'd be happy to do either even though they're completely different.
