Phonics test

Quick question for my primary school colleagues. I teach secondary so a bit clueless!

My son is just finishing year 1 and has done his phonics test. I haven't been given any results yet but the TA mentioned there are three levels. I was of the impression it was a straight forward pass or fail.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks!

Hi! You are right. A pass or fail with threshold of 32. Some schools do use the mark of 25 plus as an indicator of near success, ie not s major problem in not reaching standard with anything below that being a cause for concern

It's not meant to be a pass/fail test. It's a screening to see who would need additional support.

It's individual school policy to decide what support they offer, and it may be that this school has decided on a watching brief for near misses, and fuller support only for those who are a longer way short.

Actually it is a pass/fail.

If below the 32 cut off, they resit in Y2.
