PGDE training for secondary school maths teaching - financial support.

Ds2 is currently half way through a 4 year Applied Maths degree, and is considering teaching as a career, but we, and he are worried about how he would support himself whilst doing a postgraduate teaching qualification.

I noticed an advert for financial support for prospective Modern foreign language teachers, in the MN sidebar - and I wondered if there are similar schemes for Maths teachers.

Schools direct might be the way forward, it's training in a school based setting, rather than uni based. Most maths posts are paid ~15/16k

Sorry didn't realise you were inscotland. Can you teach with a pgce? The schools directs at our school England also get a pgce.

I did a maths gtp so I know I can't teach in Scotland.

My PGCE is valid in Scotland! GTCS recognise it but not GTP, Schools Direct etc.

If he were to train in England it's a severe shortage subject and they would throw money at him. 25k I think, depending on degree classification.

I will tell him that, noblegiraffe - at least he has two years to get this sorted out - that's something.

If he did do his post-grad teaching qualification in England, that would be portable if he wanted to return to Scotland, wouldn't it?

Yes it is portable as long as it meets the GTCS requirements for rigour, pedagogy etc and his degree is Maths. He also must cover 11-18 education (not just 11-16). Check the GTCS website for registration with qualifications outwith Scotland, but from rest of UK. I needed a transcript of my PGCE and degree for registration.

How about TeachFirst?
Paid, and much better training and support than School Direct or PGCE, and higher status - will look good to employers when if he decides to leave teaching.
He could always emigrate to England

Don't know if all do but I know some schools direct courses also give you a pgce qualification

He's contacting his old senior school to see if he can do some work experience with them, before term ends (he's already finished his exams, has no further work/tutorials this year, and is free as a bird).
