KS2 SATS marking - which subject?

Appervine · 02/01/2015 21:27

I'm applying to do KS2 Sats marking this year and I understand that I can only apply for one subject so I'm not sure which to apply for. I'm a primary teacher so obviously qualified to teach English and maths, and I have the relevant experience despite having a completely different subject specialism. I'd be interested to hear from others who have done marking in previous years. Is one subject more over subscribed than the others, or are any of them easier to mark (I'm guessing Maths)? It would be great to hear people's opinions.

I've marked maths for the last few years. It is very hard work and quite poorly paid, but after three horrid weeks I am able to contribute towards a lovely holiday. You are expected to attend a full days training (which is dull) on the Saturday immediately after sats week. The marking itself isn't too bad, but the clerical checks and general admin are a bit soul destroying.
Spag marking is all done online so no heaps of papers cluttering your house or having to be available for deliveries or collections.
I think the reading marking is slightly better paid- probably because it is harder.
Let me know if I can help with anything else

Hiya,
Sorry for butting in but I'm looking to do SATS marking too but couldn't actually find the app form on the Pearson website-went via gov. uk- is this right? Is it too late to apply now or not do you know? Sorry for all the questions and hi jacking but as is same topic I hope this is ok.

Thanks Rupert. Yes, I'm fully expecting it to be mind numbingly dull but as I'm only teaching 2 days a week this year, like you, the cash would come in useful to put towards a summer holiday. I wonder if loads of people apply for maths because it's the easier option. Are you a maths specialist?

Littlemisssunshine - I'll post a link for you later as I'm on the phone at the moment but it's on the Pearson jobs vacancy site and is listed under "marker". Deadline is jan 31st.

Yes I am a maths specialist.
This is the last year the papers will be marked manually as once the new style tests come in they will be done online like the spag.
If you work part time you will be fine- the first few years I marked I was part time. Last year I was full time and it was a bit of a nightmare but I got there.
The worst bit is passing standardisation- before you are allowed to mark any live scripts you have to do lots of test ones and not make any mistakes at all. And of course they include all the awkward borderline answers.

On reflection I think I might apply for Reading. I think having the in depth knowledge of exactly what is expected in order to gain extra marks could be more useful for my students

Littlemissunshine here is the link. Scroll down and look for Marker. Good luck! Which subject will you apply for?

I have applied to mark GAPs this year. Does anyone know when we are likely to find out if we are needed? I know most of it depends on if they have enough markers from last year who have accepted contracts for this year, as to whether or not new markers will be needed.

I have been marking English (reading only now) for years. It's exactly as the others say. A bit mind numbing but I've got a really good system and always finish way before time. I teach full time but my children have left home so I literly shut myself away for a month and just get it done. The admin and checks are the worst, but it does pay for a lovely holiday every year. Might be a bit late to apply for this year.

Literally. How embarrassing to make a typo when I'm marking English! Blush

Strictly- I applied well within time and my status says they're waiting for references. One if my referees says she hasn't received a reference request and edexel aren't responding to my enquiries.

Have your references been followed up?

Hiya. Not sure if anyone is still checking this thread, but I wondered if you're all willing to share cascaded info about your subject now that the marking period is over.

I ask because we're looking at scanned papers and think we've found a couple of marking errors, but don't know if info was cascaded down midway through that would mean the mark scheme has changed slightly. We don't want to waste our money or the review team's time if we could all share that info, assuming we're allowed to, of course!

I marked L6 maths, so am happy to answer questions about whether it's worth sending a review for that.

Thanks!

I can't help I'm afraid as I was only in the reserve list and didn't get any actual papers to mark!

Hi all, sorry to resurrect an old thread - but has anyone applied to be a SATs marker for the 2017 tests? I have applied for all 3 tests (didn't read the FAQs first - oops!!) I just wondered what the likelihood of being accepted to mark the tests was and roughly what I could expect to earn?

TIA.

I did it for first and last time last year. Gave up when I calculated my hourly rate of pay was less than 15% of minimum wage due to the unbelievable slowness of the online marking system. Think kettle on, load of washing in, feed dogs and still next question not loaded up! What I picked up was you need a pretty old computer otherwise the epen system won't like it. Gutted as it was to be my holiday spending money...

Can anyone send me a link? I've been looking for ways to earn a bit of extra cash. It's my second year teaching in primary school and I don't know if I qualify. Thanks very much.

Any of the KS1 or KS2 subjects. Especially Reading and Maths. I won't mind all the links if anyone has them. Thanks.

Type 'qca marking sats' into Google and the first one that comes up is the one you need (gov website).

I previously marked but it was horrendous and I quit halfway through last year (my third year of marking). It is by no means easy money!! I marked GPS papers.
