I'm currently job hunting- I have a degree and used to have a professional job but I career changed to be a TA a few years ago. The plan was always to do the pgce eventually, but a few things have put me off that lately.

I've seen a job advert for an Education Welfare Officer. It says previous experience as an EWO is not essential, just experience working with children, good listening skills, ability to deal with sensitive issues, ability to communicate effectively with outside agencies, good admin skills... The salary is twice what I used to get as a TA and as I've recently separated from H I could do with the money! I am currently a SAHM as we relocated 6 months ago for his job (bastard)

It isn't a role I have ever considered before, do you think an ex TA would be a good fit? My previous school was in quite a deprived area and I do have quite a bit of experience of working with children where there were family issues, low attendance, had to speak to social workers etc.

Any advice would be welcome!

Hi not been a EWO but as a HOY secondary I have intereacted with them alot (although been out for 3 yrs so things have no doubt changed!). Our EWO would meet with the pastoral assistant headteacher (i/c attendance) and go through attendance figures, which kids were a focus and see what the school had done about it, worked with family, sanctions in place etc so kind of checking school are on top of attendance issues. Also they would meet with kids and at the more serious end parents and see if they could help re; perhaps school refusal but also give the clear line that school is not a choice and parents will be fined etc. etc. Hopefully now my message has bumped you abit someone with more or more recent experience will help...you sound as if you have the right skills for it though so go for it! (Sorry about the bastard ex!!!)
