I teach part time (primary) & am thinking about doing some private tuition from September.

Had anyone got any tips or advice? Ill be looking at the tes forums tooGrin

Do you do it in your own home or go to the students homes?

Where do you advertise?

Thanks in advance

I do it. I advertise on Gumtree and got some cards which I left in the library/gave to people I knew, etc. Are you a subject specialist? Would you teach maths and English? Luckily, all my tutees are Y6, which is the year I teach in school, so plenty of resources and ideas to hand.
I charge £20/hour but ended up getting a bit ripped off by someone with twins..
PM me if you'd like to know anything else.

I tutor and I find it very rewarding. I get all my work through word of mouth. I prefer them to come to me so I offer a £5 discount off my hourly rate as an incentive!

I think it's better to go to them as i) you are in control of the timing and ii) it avoids any issues with liability - in theory if they injured themselves in your home, you're liable. Seeing their home environment is useful too. However, travel takes up time. I have tutored older students in public places such as cafes (I made them buy their fair share of coffee!)

I got the most business through an agency but they paid badly, however they did vet potential students carefully and collected payment. Another agency were useless - passed on lots of requests from students who had no intention of paying. The best paid jobs tend to be word of mouth and once you have one student you will be recommended if you're any good.

Online tutoring is becoming increasingly popular and involves no travel at all Grin. I get mine through a subject specific website.

My top tip would be to charge as much as you think the market will bear as no-one values a cheap service. Make sure payment arrangements are clear - I always ask for online payment to create a paper trail. Be aware that HMRC have been cracking down on teachers who don't declare self-employed earnings.

Thanks for the replies!
I hadn't thought about insurance! I'll definitely go to them now thanks!

I like the idea of online tutoring - sounds fab!

I've taught mainly in upper ks2 so am geared up for years 5 & 6 kids

Do you do most of your sessions after school in weekdays?
I was thinking about doing weekends as I would have childcare issues during the week.

Most families want Saturday mornings in my experience. Good luck!
