Thanks for the new thread. I was wanting to post somewhere to ask if anyone else thinks the Daily Mail is just trolling Meghan now? Today’s ludicrous story about her destiny now being in the US taking a political role - with accompanying speculation that she could run for President- is surely just the product of some journalist’s imagination rather than the “friends” that she’s allegedly been speaking to.
I think the DM are either so emboldened by their recent court victory, or so aware they will lose the next court battle, that they are now just going all out and seeing how ridiculous their stories can get?
Does anyone else agree that this is a fiction too far? She could not be so deluded?

I actually feel really sorry for H&M. They've made a lot of very big decisions at haste and without real consideration of the consequences.

H has made no bones of wanting a family and he'd already had two girlfriends cut and run because of the stress of being followed by the press, and not wanting the eternal life of ribbon cutting.

I'm sure he was very keen to get M down the aisle ASAP.

Speculating here, but if Meghan wanted a family, she will also have been conscious of her age. So she might have been happy with the speed of the courtship.

Harry was very quick to rebuke the press when the news of their relationship was made public, perhaps that made the press back off a little... enabling them to get down the aisle.

Meghan had spent very little time in the UK, and clearly doesn't have a close circle of friends nearby. Her only real family relationship is with her mother, who is obviously not up for moving to the UK.

I'm sure the wedding day was fabulous, but I suspect Meghan thought she was getting A list celebrity, and not the stifling confines of the royal family. I'm sure Harry did not sit down and spell it out either.

Meghan was a minor celeb before, who was probably only noticed in the occasional restaurant and asked for signatures. She certainly wasn't chased down the street/had her entire family and life probed by scores of newspapers.

I'm sure it was a complete shock.

I know Kate, Sophie and Camilla had it just as bad at the beginning, but it's still not acceptable. I wouldn't want my every move raked over and photographed.

Then she realises that she's absolutely trapped into very rigid confines of a role which means she can't really ever have a political opinion (magnified when Trump did his state visit - if she hadn't been on maternity leave, she would have had to attend).

Kate had a long time to really consider whether she wanted William and the royal family badly enough to put up with all the crap. She decided it was worth it for her.

Meghan did not have the time, and I don't blame her for panicking when she realised what the rest of her life would look like.

They moved to Frogmore apparently because they didn't want to be near W&K, which is fine in theory, but I suspect Meghan would have been happier in central London. Windsor is very British. I think she could probably have found aspects of California in London.

I'm not surprised she wanted to get back to LA/Toronto asap and go back into relative obscurity. The problem is that Pandora's box is open and they can't close it again.

In retrospect they should have refused the Sussex title, and Meghan could have carried on working. Harry could have been a minor working royal. But hindsight is 20/20.

I'm sure the Queen would have been open to them being very minor working royals while they had a family, as they did with W&K, but H&M went about it the wrong way with the announcement in January that they wanted to be royal as well as work commercially, which the Queen couldn't allow after the Wessex's chaos.

The announcement in January created an absolute frenzy because of the ramifications throughout the royal family. It caused a media storm.

They could have said nothing, spent a few months in Canada/California/Africa and enjoyed the time with Archie. Now his first year has been marred by the chaos that they created, by simply not being patient.

And now what?! Harry doesn't have the skills to be an independent billionaire, which is the lifestyle he's been living. His only skill is being a member of the royal family, which he seemed to do quite well (obviously some moodiness obscured by good PR).

Meghan probably had the a list pull immediately after her marriage, so could have taken good film roles, but the way that the exit from the royal family has been handled won't endear her to film producers.

The charity seems to have been cobbled together to give Harry something to do, as at least he has some experience in engaging with charities, but he's not capable of running it, so someone else has to be paid to do that.

Then Covid trashed any momentum they have had, so it's like starting again.

I suspect by the time of the Commonwealth Service Harry had begun to realise some of the realities of the life they were leaving, and the difficulties ahead of them.

Meghan can probably do quite well outside the royal family. She will get some film roles, possibly more than she would have done pre-marriage. She's probably still breathing a sigh of relief - she does not appear to be someone who wants to be directed to the nth degree for the rest of her life, and I wouldn't want that either.

The concern would be what happens to their marriage. One of them must life in a country they are not familiar with, with no family or close friends around them. Right now its Harry. He is directionless and with no obvious money making skills.

That's a tough position for anyone to be in. Plus now there is Archie to consider.

I don't envy them at all. They have made it worse than it needed to be, but they are where they are.

I got the impression that she liked talking to the crowds accepting flowers and presents and so on. Maybe more will be revealed in the books. There might be a bit more about why royal life didn't suit in the Scobie book.

The Mail has been vile. I wish they would just leave this couple alone, they are having enough difficulty getting on with their lives at the moment, like others, because of the constraints of the pandemic.

I think Meghan probably does now think she was 'meant' to be in the USA. It's good to take positives from any situation. Only time will tell.

Good luck to them both.

To be fair they were forced to announce the exit prematurely after it was leaked to the press. (By the same journalist who gave the Cambridge’s publicist’s partner two large pay-offs, whose editor is currently being sued for hacking Harry’s phone.)

I don’t think Harry and Meghan had anything except good intentions. Meghan obviously has a strong work ethic and sense of social justice and she thought being a royal would be all stuff like her work with the Grenfell kitchen and with that clothing company that provide free clothes for impoverished people. She obviously really loves getting hands on with small charities and she probably thought that’s what being royal would be about. Not all the other stuff.

The commercial side is a weak argument. Other royals shill the royal brand for money all the time, so far Harry and Meghan are one of the few royals not to have exploited being royal for commercial purposes. I mean Andrew’s commercial business “PitchPalace” literally exploits the royal name, and he stole money from his charitable foundation to pay off people. Harry and Meghan haven’t actually done anything yet but just because they registered trademarks (which William and Kate did too, and the press praised them for being so “business savvy”) they got dragged by tabloids pretending they were two seconds away from selling socks with crowns on. Of course the official Buckingham Palace gift shop does sell socks with crowns on and a lot worse, but somehow it’s only tacky and exploitative when Harry and Meghan hypothetically do something even though they haven’t. Not when the RF actually do that very same thing.

Does the RF benefit personally from what is sold at BP? I assume no, and that’s the difference.

Yes, of all the red tops, they are the worst.
Bet they were pissed off when H&M went, cutting off some of the clickbait.

And his 'charitable trust' paying out £350,000 to the prince's household (his own PA), and it was breaking the law, a public watchdog had to intervene and he has had to pay this back, and surprise surprise he's now shutting the charity down. Very murky.

Personally, I am interested in how H&M's charitable ventures take shape in the future, the two MM was involved in during her time here, were very well received (Grenfell Cookbook and Smartworks). Good ideas that worked.

@ Ballet1992 I agree with a lot of what you say although I am not persuaded MM wanted “ relative obscurity “!

Report
Viviennemary · 20/06/2020 10:10

I think the very last thing Meghan wants is obscurity. She wants to be out there meeting all the other a listers and important folk but with the extra kudos of bring royal. Does it work that way. It would seem perhaps not.

ButteryPuffin · 20/06/2020 10:11

@Ballet1992 good post. As you say, they panicked. If they'd negotiated a couple of 'quiet' years a la W&K in Anglesey, possibly including time abroad, they'd have been comfortably riding out Covid now. It is a shame. I said on the previous thread that Harry has spent all his life in institutions that organise everything for him. He's never had to think for himself.

Report
StartupRepair · 20/06/2020 10:27

I don't think they wanted quiet time. They fell in love with themselves as global humanitarians without thinking about what underlies that. The ridiculous rush to the altar with no time even to meet Meghan's dad just shows how they lack judgement as they race from one fantasy to the next. They need to stop and do some realistic reflection on how they want their life to be.

Are we allowed to derail via off topic chat?

I was looking at pictures of the first wedding of Earl Spencer (he wasn't Earl then) to Victoria Lockwood.
Have you ever seen a glummer wedding. The pages and bridesmaids faces! 😂

Harry is there looking glum too, so not totally off topic. 😉

I get the impression they’re both quite immature and impulsive. Also stubborn and given to flouncing. Doesn’t bode well for the future. They need to completely change their approach. Sadly I don’t think that is going to happen.

I remember seeing the photos from Charles Spencer’s wedding and thinking they all looked throughly miserable at the time.

It wasn't a nice day - raining, so the fur on the bride's dress stank. Raine had decided the guests would only get afternoon tea - so basically a few cakes, and everyone was hungry. Didn't seem the happiest of weddings.

I remember Charles Spencer's first wedding. It just looked doomed from the start. He was quite handsome when he was young. The Spencers are definitely a better looking lot than the Windsors.

Surely only giving guest Afternoon Tea after a wedding is very unusual for a high society wedding?

Interesting you were there at Earl Spencer's first wedding! Victoria Lockwood/Spencer has been vocal since that it was not a happy marriage.
I remember feeling sorry for Charlene at her wedding. Meant to be a happy day and she broke down crying, not sure they were happy tears either.
I agree with a pp that much of the criticism towards H&M could have been avoided if they had not accepted the additional titles and fanfare/benefits and just remained Prince Harry and Meghan.

Viviennemary · 20/06/2020 11:55

Now Harry and Meghan seem to have officially dropped have dropped the royal family lawyers. So the DM is writing that's an indication they won't be back. That does seem a bit jumping to conclusions.
