Not sure why Edward is "just" a Prince, but Duke of York is a title traditionally given to the Monarch's second son.

Edward will be Duke of Edinburgh once his father dies.

Ah yes - of course he is an Earl now that I think about it.

But he is never referred to as Earl even though Sophie is always called the Countess......

Yep Edward gets his father's title when he passed hence why he is only an Email now

Edward won’t get his father’s title when Prince Philip dies......well, not straight away anyway.
When Prince Philip, The duke of Edinburgh dies his title will pass automatically to Prince Charles. Philip can’t leave it to who he wants- it doesn’t work like that.
Charles will not use the title as prince of Wales is a higher rank than Duke of Edinburgh so he will continue to be the prince of Wales.

Then, when HM The Queen dies and Charles becomes king the title will become ‘ re absorbed’ into the family pot- which only the monarch has control over.
So it will be completely up to Charles to bestow the title on his brother.
It seems that both of Edwards parents have expressed a desire for Edward to become duke of Edinburgh which Charles will be fully appraised of - but we will just have to wait and see what happens. I suppose we will know then if Charles likes Edward or not!!!

Given that Edward's TV company were caught surreptitiously filming Prince William at St Andrews, probably not Grin

Funnily enough I was thinking about this the other day. My understanding, and I am fairly sure it has already been made public, is that Prince Edward will become the Duke of Edinburgh when his father dies. However, I then wondered if his children would become Princess Louise of Edinburgh and Prince James of Edinburgh, like the York girls.

Edward was set to be the Duke of Cambridge, asked to be the Earl of Wessex. He choose that title because of the book Shakespeare in love, and the character Lord Wessex.

They won't because their parents have chosen for them not to be HRH Prince/ss.

The could (and some would say legally technically are) HRH Princess Louise of Wessex and HRH Prince James of Wessex at the moment. As grandchildren of the monarch on the male line they are/were automatically entitled to the titles.

It's not quite clear if they've been given other titles or if they don't use their titles (in the same way Camilla's senior title is HRH The Princess of Wales, but she uses the Cornwall title instead).

So, the Princess Royal and the Earl of Wessex both decided to not have their children be HRH as they were highly unlikely to ever be monarchs. It made sense for Beatrice and Eugenie to have the title as they were 5th and 6th in line to the throne (before the Cambridge babies.) None of HM's children are referred to by their names. They are (in age order) The Prince of Wales, The Princess Royal, The Duke of York, and the Earl of Wessex. Edward chose to be the Earl of Wessex rather than a Duke because of the character from "Shakespeare in Love." Camilla uses Cornwall as Wales is associated with Diana, plus Cornwall is Charles' next designation. Sir Tim Laurence (married to the PR), was a Vice Admiral in the Navy so he uses all of those titles. Fergie is still The Duchess of York as she is the mother to two HRH's and The DOY thought it would be disrespectful to take that away. The Countess of Wessex gained the title when she married The EOW. It's unnecessary but polite to bow/curtsey to all of HM's grandchildren regardless of their titles (except the Wessex children as they're still young.) The Wessex children are Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn. I used to work at BP and we had to know exactly which titles people had and why.

Andrew demanded that his girls got the princess title.
He is an entitled wazzock.
His behaviour at the Buck House garden party I went to was comically childish.

When Sophie Wessex does engagements the is fantastically down to earth and chilled.

Andrew is indeed a wazzock. He’s been awful the few times I met him when I was in the forces.

My FIL tells a lovely tale of when he ripped him a new one because he was so disrespectful.

The Princess Royals children would never have been HRH unless she married a Prince who'd give that to them. The most they'd ever have been is a subsidiary title from whatever title their father was given.

@ta1kinpeace he didn't have to demand anything. As grandchildren on the male line his children were automatically entitled to HRH Prince/ss. The only time he'd have to demand anyhing would be if he wanted them not to be HRH Prince/ss
