The litter tray

She's stopped eating

Have taken my much loved cat (8) to the vets today to get bloods done. She's off her food - has had little appetite for about 3 days (has a couple of mouthfuls, stops). Tired and withdrawn. Turns out she's lost a lot of weight under all that fluff (0.7kg) -she's a Maine Coon so has very dense fur. I'm kicking myself for not realising earlier... Have had to force-feed
her redrydration fluids. Handhold whilst I wait for the results?

Such a worry for you, I hope the bloods reveal it’s nothing serious and she will be ok. Flowers
Did they say when to expect results?

Thanks so much - results tomorrow. She seems so lethargic tonight. Normally comes sprinting as soon as the catfood cupboard door creaks open.

Still hiding, still not eating. Thanks for asking.

When are the results due in?

Nothing obvious in the bloods, but still not eating. No interest at all, not even in her favourite treats. I'm baffled. What could it be?

What’s the vets plan?.

When my dogs won’t eat I siphon chicken broth using a small syringe.
One of my dogs wouldn’t eat for a week and this kept him going.

I also kept a cat alive by syringing meat broth.
What did the vet think OP ? What will they do next ?

When my cat was like this, she had a linear foreign body - essentially, a piece of thread caught on her tongue, down her throat and into her stomach, and beyond into her intestine. Nothing came up on bloods, and it didn't show on x-ray but an eagle-eyed vet nurse spotted it.
Hoping your cat is feeling better soon.

Thanks to everyone for their kind messages. The vet says he will call me tomorrow. I have rehydration fluid to keep syringing into her, and have got some cat 'soup' in the hope that she will lick something. But no interest at all. She's just sleeping all the time.

Are there any vets on here? She has a heart murmur, could it be a heart problem?

Not a vet so can't help with that but sending well wishes and have you tried Webbox lick-e-lix to feed?

Report
Bluemascara4 · 14/04/2021 21:12

I too recommend likelix .

Hope the vet comes up with a plan . Did he examine her mouth ? X

Thanks everyone - she hasn't eaten overnight again and seems quiet and subdued this am. Calling the vet first thing and going hunting for Lickelix. I'm really worried I'm losing her now - it's been so long. He did examine her mouth (she's had dental problems before, but didn't identify anything).

Sorry to hear this. Did the vet check for lumps?

Sadly I lost my beautiful girl cat in June 2019. She'd stopped eating and looked scrawny. The vet found a large mass in her tummy. Not visible but feel able.

Hope it's something simpler and she's on the mend soon. We kept our girl going a little on tinned tuna but after a while she resumed no eating.

Vet has taken her in and put her on a drip. Doing some x-rays to see if she's swallowed something. In bits. She must be feeling so wretched and she hates being in a cage (rescue puss). I can't even stay with her to comfort her.

Bless her. I hope the vet figures it out quickly and she's back home with you soon. 💐

Update: vet says can't feel any lumps in her tummy, checked mouth again and all fine. Can't work out what's wrong.

X-rays are showing gas in her bowel suggestive of compacted hairballs. She's home for a night with an appetite stimulant to see if she can eat, and if that helps her poo it out. If not, it probably needs surgery. She seems much livelier after the I/v though. She's sitting next to me having a good chat (I think I am being told off for leaving her).

Well that sounds more positive.

That's positive - fingers crossed she continues to improve.
