The litter tray

New cat

We got a 2 year old rescue cat on Wednesday and he went straight in to the room I'd prepared for him. Initially he hid but would always come out if we were in the room and be very affectionate, rubbing his head on us, purring, falling asleep on me. I thought this was all very positive so last night I left his door ajar for the first time. I shut all other doors so he only had access to his room, the stairs, and the hall. All perfectly safe I thought. However he somehow managed to open the kitchen door and it took me 2 hours of frantic searching this morning before I discovered he was wedged behind an unmovable kitchen cupboard (I only found out by dismantling some of the cupboard and using my phone camera to take a photo of the area behind the cupboard). I thought I'd cat proofed the house pretty well. I had no idea there was a tiny gap leading to the back of the cupboards. It took my husband a further 2 hours to get him out. In the end he had to break the back of the cupboard and drag him through the hole. Obviously this was extremely stressful for the cat and must have hurt him. He's now back in his room with the door closed but seems traumatised (understandably). He hasn't eaten or had any water at all today nor has he gone to the toilet. I've been lying on the bed in his room for an hour in the hope he'd join me as he did the first 2 days, so enthusiastically. He won't come anywhere near me. I feel really sad that he's so frightened and now too afraid to interact when he was initially so loving and trusting. I feel like we've let him down. Is there anyone with more experience of cats who can reassure me he'll be OK in time? We just want to give him a loving home.

Hopefully he is just a bit scared and will make friends with you again soon . But are you sure he was not hurt more than you think ? cats are very good at hiding pain esp when they are scared , is there any chance of any bait ( mouse . slug etc ) been down there that he could of eaten when he washed his paws ?
I certainly dont want to worry you but if you dont see him eating / drinking/ going to the toilet by tomorrow afternoon you may want to get him checked over by the vets.

He will absolutely be fine. First thing we did with my two was rinse them off in the sink as they'd pooed all over their carrier and rolled around in it Hmm very dramatic and traumatised for a night and then they'd completely forgotten about it by the next morning and were happily exploring and climbing on me. Can you put some tuna out for him and maybe get some toys out?

He might just be scared, but I would definitely get him a checked out at the vet. Cats hide pain very well.

Some cats are more resilient than others, but he may have actually hurt himself. Take him to the vet if he doesn't rally round.

Thank you for the replies and advice
. I went in this morning and he's eaten all his food, had water and used the litter tray. He was very friendly and sat on my lap purring for 30 minutes. Looks like he's fine! I'm very happy.

One of mine did exactly the same thing. Once I realised where she was and that she was safe. I left her too it. I met her 8 days later!
A cat will not make itself uncomfortable. So leave him too it.

Fortunately I'd Ben prewarned that she would hide.

@Toddlerteaplease 8 days?! Wow! In retrospect I did think I should have left him alone and he would have emerged in his own time. I was just so stressed though - he had no access to food or water and it was so cold and dirty there.

Yes. But I suspect she was coming out at night. She was eating and drinking I think. She more than made up for it when she did come out. She completely dominated everything from that moment onwards.

@Toddlerteaplease I wish I'd left him longer now. We put him and ourselves through huge stress trying to get him out for 2 hours (and dismantling the kitchen in the process!). Poor boy. He seems OK today.

I felt really guilty that I was bonding with Magic and not getting to know Maia. The foster carer told me to make the most of Magic. Magic was less than impressed when Maia reappeared!

Oh dear! I hope they're good friends now.
