Cat scratching sofa

Can anyone help? I have a fourteen year old cat who seems to go outside less and less. Unfortunately she's started scratching the front of my velvet sofa. Apart from keeping the sofa covered, does anyone have any ways of stopping her?

I'm not sure you can. My old cat used to do this, and nothing stopped her - in fact, any attempt to stop her made her do it more, and she'd look at you with an expression that said 'I like doing this and you can't stop me'.

Have you tried those really tall scratching posts?. They like to stretch up to scratch.

You can get Perspex protectors on amazon to attach to the sofa if all else fails.

I feel your pain, my cat never clawed the dfs leather and I bought a duresta velvet one which he managed to sneak in to wreck it.

Thank you. I did have a scratching post, but she ignored it so I got rid of it. Silly me! sounds like I'll have to cover it, at least when we're out or overnight.

I wonder if she’d prefer the flat cardboard scratch pads?. Was the post you got short? They don’t go for the short ones.

@Fluffycloudland77 That may have been the problem. I've seen the cardboard ones...I'll give that a try. Thank you.

Mine love the big flat cardboard scratcher.
