Cats and hot weather

Poor cats are wilting in the heat😿.
A suggestion if you have a cat that likes to be brushed - I’ve found when it’s very hot like this, mine like it if I wet the brush a little. Not soaking wet of course, just damp, seems to cool them off a bit more.

Mine like to have their food pouches from the fridge. Was always told cats prefer their food slightly warmed, so it more closely replicates the temperature of freshly killed prey (yuk) but in this weather mine are certainly keener on chilled.

The lions at Longleat have been getting ice to lick!

Mine like being stroked with an ice cube in your hand. One likes running under the water from a watering can, but she was at the back of the line when getting the how to behave like a cat bit of her brain having spent too long queuing for fluffy fur.

Will try the wet brush. My house is fairly cool, but I can't let Snorg out in the heat, especially as she's black, long haired and very bracycephalic.

Mine is very keen on a 'tent' I set up for him in the garden. By tent I mean a folding camping chair with a towel draped across it (in the shade). He loves it Grin

Brushing my cat a lot - he demands it. I'll try the wet brush technique. I tried with a damp cloth when it was really hot last year - but just brushing seemed to be the thing.

Mine are just flopping about anywhere there is some shade.
Basil is glued to 'his' chair all day (and out all night). Lenny is currently asleep in a box.
Karl and Sybil are outside in the shade somewhere.

DD read something earlier about using the water from tinned tinned tuna (adding a bit more water maybe?) and freezing it for ice cubes for cats

Awww tuna lollies for cats! Brilliant 🤣

Grumpy I too have a Basil 😄 🙌

Lots of great tips though. Love the tent idea.

I won’t be bothering with special coolmats again though. Bought one last year and with the predictable contrariness of cats..they wouldn’t sit on it. Only next to it 🙄

Mine are enjoying the garden and the fact that DD and DS are home to let them out and play Cat Watcher (my cats have only been going out a couple of weeks , still quite unsure of themselves in the garden)

Jet black with short dense fur , not an ideal combination.

Our boy is creeping about in the border , his sister is lardng on the patio table (which is black glass Grin )

They are drinking and peeing well, eating their breakfast and supper as normal.

I did think about buying one /two of those cool mats but mine would've totally ignored them too!

Just as they ignore the expensive cat flap (£50+) that we had set into a glass panel (£ 180+ ) to give them micro chip activated freedom.

I'm sure they'll catch on and use it but at the moment they like having the doors open so they can flounce or lie across the threshold .
