The litter tray

New cat under the bed

Our Olive - adopted, 1-year-old - is spending 5-8 hours sleeping under my bed during the day. She is our first ever cat, and this is her seventh day with us. Is this normal?

Happily she is eating, drinking, playing and nuzzling, first thing in the morning and during evenings.

Completely normal. One of mine hid under the kitchen units for a week. I never saw her.

I’d say so! Mine sleep all day if they aren’t outside up to no good. X

Only 5 to 7 hours? Where does she sleep the rest of the day?

Our rescue cat did the same when we first got him - that's the reason we named him "Dusty" (we're not big cleaners Blush). After a few weeks he stopped and never hides at all now.

She is still settling in and it's her safe place.

Completely normal. She is just getting used to her surroundings and this is her safe space where she thinks no one can get to her.
In my experience, you need to give cats time.
Dont worry, soon enough, she will be all over you, demanding to sleep in your bed, chair or right in the middle of the staircase Grin

Mine sleep in some strange places. OK on the bed, sofa, floor, even in the wardrobe seem normal(ish), but both sometimes sleep under my bed, both sometimes sleep on (quite narrow) windowsills, bathroom floor (on the bathmat, so it isn't keeping cool on the lino) and Boycat has a "cave" in the boxes of junk in the box room.

I should point out this is 3 years down the line - for the first couple of months they would only sleep behind or even IN the sofa!

Absolutely normal. Mine hid behind the washing machine or under the table for three weeks. Just let her do what she’s happy with and when she’s feeling more settled, she’ll start to explore more
