Start using Mumsnet PremiumAnother call for kitten name ideas (with cute pics)
(29 Posts)I've name-changed for this thread only so that if it is seen by someone who knows me (or knows the kittens) it doesn't out me for the very personal details I've put on other threads.
These two gorgeous baby girls are going to be our kittens as soon as they are old enough to leave their mummy. We are building a spreadsheet of possible names and any suggestions you might have would be welcome.
We are a family of geeks and nerds, many of our ideas so far come from SF and fantasy, or myths and legends. I'd like the names to be representative of strength and independence, but they shouldn't be too complicated to shout out of the back door when they need to come in at night, or too likely to be a name already shared with classmates of the kids at school. It would be nice if they were an obvious "pair" of names but it's OK if they aren't.
A few samples from the list so far to get you going:
Orca and Raven
Faith and Kendra
Artemis and Asteria
Any other ideas?
I'm afraid it's no use asking me! One of our cats was called by my name on here and we've just taken in two all black kittens, both girls. After a week of scratching our heads, they seem to have ende up being called Thingy and Worst. I also once had a cat called Nameless (I wasn't feeling very inspired at the time)
"Nameless" does inspire a geeky option - one of my fave books is the Tombs of Atuan where the priestess of the Nameless Ones (primordial god-like shadow creatures) has no name, but is called "Arha" (the eaten one) - but I am not sure it's a concept I want to honour. (She does have a name in the end, as it is given back to her when she escapes)
I love Orca & Raven - they suit them really well
Hmmm.
Tiffany and Gytha spring to mind.
Seven and Nine
Starbuck and Boomer
Andi and Red (Shawshank Redemption)
Seven and Nine are going on the list.
Starbuck and Boomer too.
(not familiar with Shawshank Redemption. Will go and have a look)
Love Orca!
Troi and Tasha (Make It So!).
Gamora & Nebula
Polgara and poledra, morgan and ivy
Minerva (Minnie) and Luna (HP)
Rue and Prim(rose) (hunger games)
Arwen and Glad (Galadriel)
Zelda and Peach (classic computer games)
Circe and Hecate
Ripley (alien)
Kira (DS9)
Hera and Juno
Merry and Pippin
Cassandra
Medea and Minerva
Electra
We've got a cat named after a hobbit and a cat named after a Ferengi.
Got to be Uhura and Ripley hasn’t it?
Or Sarah and Connor
Neil and buzz to mark the moon landing anniversary
My two are Vic and Bob. They're sisters (obviously) 🤣🤣
Katniss & Prim
Aurora and Nox - Roman goddesses of dawn and night
or
Luna and Nox - ditto, moon and night
Sabriel and Liriel
I don't have any name suggestions just yet but I wanted to say that kitties learn their names better when they end in the ee sound like how the word kitty ends in the ee sound.
Valentina and Svetlana - the first two women in space
Panda and Puma
Any of the Dr's companion names, Clara and Amy?
Pi and Chi - more maths than geeky I suppose.
Kaylee and River.
Leia and Amidala.
Arya and Sansa?
Kendall and kylie
Romy and Michele
Kaylee and Inara
Thanks all!
We got the list up to over 100 ideas before we realised we had to stop and start trimming down instead. We have narrowed it down to 10 final options and will visit the kittens again before we decide (but Nebula is emerging as a strong favourite so thank you @Iklboo)
Going to go back to my normal username now so I won't be back to this thread but thank you again for your ideas.
