Cat has split her tongue

My cat has split her tongue somehow. I've taken her to the vet twice now and she has been given pain relief and a long lasting antibiotic injection as the wound was infected.

The problem is that she keeps attacking her tongue with her front paws and making it bleed. I'm so worried she is going to rip it even more. It's so distressing to watch and all I can do is wrap her tightly in a towel to stop her using her claws.

I bought her a cone from pets at home but she managed to take it off within seconds ( she is a very small cat with a small head )

Any ideas how else to stop this .At this stage I'm considering putting bandages on her paws.

Poor cat, that sounds nasty. I'd take cat and cone back to the vet as soon as you can and see if they can suggest a way of keeping it on more securely or have something more suitable? I was going to suggest scratch mitts but you'd need to secure and something on her paws might make her try to chew them off and cause more problems.

Thank you - those cones look good but earliest delivery is Friday. I've ordered a soft recovery collar that will arrive by Wednesday so fingers crossed it does the job.

We have now clipped her claws as low as we can and that seems to be helping.

I'm pleased tonight as I bought some different food that she can actually eat as she was struggling with her normal stuff.

Thanks.

She's better today - no more clawing herself and no more bleeding so I've not been back to the vets. It will take a few weeks to heal properly but hopefully if she leaves it alone she will gradually get better each day.

She started attacking it again last night so I put the new soft cone on and it stayed on ( much to her disgust!) I've taken it off now an she's curled up quite contentedly.

Poor love. Such a pretty puss. I hope she's now on the road to recovery.

ah, bless her, she looks like she's got a little smile on her face. Maybe when it gets to a certain point in healing her tongue gets itchy.
