The litter tray

Oh God, not again.

My lovely girl Autumn, only 8 years old, has been acting poorly for the last few days - not eating, hiding in the house more than usual. She slept on our bed last night which is unusual. I knew something was wrong, so I roused DH at 4:00 AM this morning and we drove her to the nearest 24 hour emergency veterinary practice. The doctor there said given the poor circulation in her hind legs and other symptoms it was likely cardiomyopathy with a saddle thrombosis. She offered to do tests but I preferred having them done by her regular vet, who would open at 7:30.

So back home, then off again to the regular vet, who kept her for diagnostics. He called me when they had blood work done. She's in renal failure and has liver dysfunction too. She's due to get an an ultrasound within the hour to confirm everything, but she's likely in organ failure due to the cardiovascular disease and we'll have to let her go later today.

My heart is breaking. She is such a sweet girl, and has always been my 17 year old daughter's cat. She is leaving us so young and so swiftly. DS is off at uni so we'll have to Facetime with him tonight to give him the completely unexpected news.

Godspeed, dear Autumn.

Just a bit of a handhold please.

Oh God, not again.

So sorry for you and that diagnosis. She's such a beautiful cat and no age at all.

Handhold for you as long as you need it.

Oh I’m so sorry, MissConductUS. I’ve lost three of my old darlings since the summer and none of them get and easier. She’s a stunning looking kitty and if it helps, you should hold on the knowledge that you’ve given little Autumn a wonderful life, that she might’ve have had with another family. 💐

So sorry. I was in this position in August with Maia. She had HCM but her kidneys failed very quickly and it was the only thing to do. ThanksThanks

Maia was only 8 as well. I feel cheated that she didn't live to a good old age.

Thank you for the handhold and kind words ladies. I'm heading off to the vet to be there once the ultrasound is done and will check back later.

Here she is with her brother, who we also adopted.

Oh God, not again.

It's over. The ultrasound showed extensive, irreversible heart disease. It was time to let her go.

Thank you all.

I am so grateful for the kindness on MN, it helps more than I can say. Those who don't understand and love cats don't really appreciate the bond you form and the place they take in your life and heart.

Last night and today have been hard, particularly seeing all of her bits about the house - her food dish, bed, toys, etc. I don't have the strength to put them away today. DD seems to be holding up okay and DS was upset but I think he'll be okay. It's just a shame that he was so far away when all of this happened.

I read somewhere that when a pet dies you lose a piece of your heart, but the next one gives you a piece of theirs and thus over the many years your heart becomes more loving, open and trusting, just as theirs are. I do think that's true. I am a better person for having her in my life and she surely gave me her heart.

Thanks again dear MN'ers.
