The litter tray

Next door neighbour leaves cat out all day...

Just this really. They are both out at work all day and have cat. He sits all day on the doorstep and meows. I don't know much about cats, but I don't think this is right. When they are home at weekends, they are very much whizzing in and out all day and the cat seems to miss his slot and opportunity to get into the house. Should I put a note through the door letting them know that he sits on the doorstep all day meowing? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't worry - that cat will move in with another family. It's how my parents have obtained their many cats over the years.

What? This is what cats do. Back when my family had cats we all left the house around 8.30am. If cat was in cat, was in. If cat was out, cat was out. Until someone came home around 4. They can fend for themselves quite easily if outside as well as sleep all day under a bed in inside

That whiny cat on the doorstep will turn into the whiny cat wanting to be let out even if there was someone in! There's nothing to worry about.

Have they never heard of a cat flap?
It's freezing out, poor thing. Don't know if your note would achieve anything, worth a try I guess.

This is why the charity where I volunteer doesn't home cats to people unwilling to install a catflap (except in very rare circumstances when someone is in all day). The cat is likely to wander off and find a home elsewhere if not allowed access to his own home.

As this is MN, you will however get lots of people saying it's fine...

I have recently got a cat flap installed that tracks my cats movements, and I am shocked at how long she spends outside!! It starts at 6am and she is out for hours at a time! Only came in when it started to snow.

The cat may be crying to get in because it’s cold. Could you fashion a little outdoor shelter for him - doesn’t have to be expensive

I wouldn’t want to be outside all day it’s freezing.

It’s very shoddy pet care, it sounds like they don’t really want her.

We don't have a cat flap. Mainly because he likes to bring home "presents" 🤢 but I'm a sahm and am at home a lot so he just sits outside the window waiting for me to open it and let him in 😁

I'd put a note in the door op but probably won't make a difference but at least you've tried.

If people are gonna have a cat with no cat flap and are going to be out all the time then why don't the give him access to a shed with bedding food and water, seems cruel to leave him out all day 😩

We don’t have a cat flap. Our cat is in from 8 - 5.30 during the week, then potters in and out when her slaves are in to open the back door until bedtime. I’m off school holidays, and on sunny days she will happily go out when DP leaves for work, and have to be hauled in for bed at midnight. I bring her drinks and sunscreen like a spa attendant.

This is not okay. Especially not in winter. I don't understand why people would get a pet if they're going to treat it like this. Absolutely put a note through.

No wonder there are so many cats in rescues still.
I do have a cat flap but they're really not a necessity. Any healthy cat will be able to find somewhere to shelter if they can't get in. All the cats we had through my childhood were let out in the morning and didn't come back again until the evening. They never came to any harm, never strayed etc.

I don't know how good they are at managing in the cold but it really upsets me to see this. Our neighbors did the same thing.

We have a cat flap yet our spoilt cat insists on sitting in front of the patio doors until we open a window for her. She'll only use the. Cat flap if we bend down and hold it open for her Hmm

Neighbours of ours let their cat out all day too however have a window opened for them to come in/out (think it’s a utility with locked door) i do see the cats at the door sometimes but mainly they use this window. We live beside a big field so I think it spends half the day in it. Maybe they have an open window you can’t see ?
