My old boy (15) has been having problems chewing recently, thought he may have lost a tooth. Today noticed he has a lump on his bottom jaw, quite firm and painful. His jaw is now quite swollen. Obviously vets tomorrow, he is managing soft pate food, but I'm really worried that it's a tumour. He won't let me look and I don't want to stress him too much. What can I do to make him comfortable in the mean time?

Oh that is very worrying. I hope it's not a tumour, but I think you need to be prepared for the worst. I'm sure it could easily be something else less serious though.

The only thing you can do until tomorrow is to feed him soft food.

Good luck for tomorrow.

Sorry to hear about your cat being unwell. Our old lady (14) had some eating problems and swelling - it turned out to be an infected tooth and she had an op to pull the tooth and drain the pus and then 10 days of antibiotics.

It's come up very quickly and it's painful, so I'm hoping it's an abcess. He's really ds's cat, he's had him since he was 14, so although he's prepared, hes going to be devastated.

Hopefully, it's a tooth problem that vet can deal with today.

Antibiotics then tooth extraction tomorrow. But X-ray first to make sure there's nothing else.

It's good that's he's been seen. He'll be more comfortable now. Good luck for tomorrow.

That's actually very good news, I know you were thinking it could be a tumour so "just" an abscess must be a relief.

Ah well that went to shit quickly. They did a scan, because his liver was swollen and he had growths. Just got back from saying goodbye. Thanks for the support.
