He unusually disappeared for most of the afternoon outside, he normally stays in and sleeps during the day and goes out at night.
He came in about an hour ago looking scared, bushy tail and limping- we can't see any blood on his fur but there's a patch that seems wet on his left leg, thought maybe he's been hurt and licking it?

Initially we were really worried and were going to take him to vets tonight but he has since calmed down a bit- is now purring when stroked, has eaten a little bit and has walked but does seem to be limping a bit. I've spoken to the vet who advises monitor him tonight and call them in the morning if still concerned.

I'm stupidly worried about him though- is there anything else I can/should be doing or should be looking out for?

Can you separate the wet bit of fur and see if there is anything on his skin like a bite, puncture marks

We've tried but he's not keen on his legs being touched (not unusual for him) and he has quite long fur.

He seems settled at the moment, laying on the couch washing himself but he is definitely not his usual self.

Maybe he got bitten, this happened with our puss, we took her to the ooh vet for antibiotics and a painkiller. Hope he's ok.

You need to take him to vets, if he has been knocked by a car or kicked the injuries will not always be visible unfortunately. Try emergency vets or see if the PDSA is open.

Thanks all.

It was the emergency vets we rang earlier who suggested monitor him overnight (our vet has their own out of hours service). He's asleep at the moment, we're keeping a close eye on him.

The fact he was all puffed up seems to me to indicate he has been in a cat fight. One of mine had a bite on his elbow joint which we couldn't see for all his fluffy fur and he too was limping. We took him to the vet and he was put in antibiotics but when his limp didn't go after a week we took him back. Turns out the bite had infected his bone. He got over it after a couple of weeks but it was an expensive cat fight as it cost us over £700 in vet bills - thank goodness for pet insurance!

Hope he's better today.

Thanks everyone.

He is absolutely fine today, no limp and seems happy and content. I did wonder about him being in a fight as he seems scared when he came in.

Will continue to keep an eye on him, thanks for your advice Smile
