Update your microchips catpeople!

I have posted about this on a thread, but think it's important enough to warrant a thread of its own.

Most of us are pretty good these days at getting our cats microchipped and arranging for stray cats who find us to be scanned for microchips. But do we always remember to keep the registered details up to date if we move house, change phone numbers or rehome a cat elsewhere?

Recently we took an injured stray to our vet. Luckily she was microchipped, the owner was telephoned and I was able to take the cat back to her home. However the vet was dealing with another stray who was also microchipped but the contact details were out of date and so the owner could not be contacted. Such a shame.

I know that some owners simply don't care that much, or deliberately move and leave a cat behind. For the majority of us though, I think it's a genuine oversight and we'd be devastated if we couldn't be reunited with our cats because of it.

So just a reminder to

UPDATE YOUR MICROCHIPS, CATPEOPLE!

Sooo true!!

I once ran over a dog Blush I scooped him up and took him to the vets (he was fine thankfully, i was a bloody wreck)

Vet scanned him ... He was chipped ... but it hadn't been registered!!

Thankfully through the power of FB, dog and owners were reunited.

After this I'm v passionate about registering micro chips!!

Yes! So important and sadly so common that details aren't updated.

A vet friend told me that if a stray cat is not microchipped, it is given to RSPCA/ animal shelter. If however it is microchipped but the owner can't be contacted for some reason (eg phone number disconnected), they have to put the cat down. I think there was some change in the law recently which made this happen. He said vets hate doing this but it is a legal obligation.

Any vets on here who can correct me if I've got this wrong?

Not true. Not a vet but CP volunteer. The animal can't be rehomed for a certain amount of time. If no owner comes forward then the shelter can rehome.

Yes, another charity volunteer here and we rehome cats in situations where owner can't be contacted even if microchipped. Our cut off is usually two weeks until we advertise for rehoming.

It's usually possible to see the details of who implanted the microchip as well (a charity or a vet's, for example) and contact them as well if owner's details are out of date.
