The litter tray

Should I do anything about a smelly splint??

The dressing has been on her leg for two weeks one more week to go thank god. It’s not bothered her too much. She has a go when I take her collar off so she can wash herself. There is a small bald patch at the top of the dressing. Not broken down. Trouble is that it smells. I thought she had wind as she’s bee
Living off Gourmet which she’s never had before and which she seems to be addicted to. Is it that bad for her she’s housebound so I’m giving her what she wants. I’ve. put my nose to the dressing and it does pong I’m scared there’s a sore there but I can’t see anything and it’s all intact. I’m also scared that if I go back to the vets she will redress it and add more weeks to it which is what happened when she the pot fell off.

Could it be just generally using the litter tray do you think?

If it's the actual bandage that smells it could be that the skin underneath is infected so I would either take it off and have a good look or ask the vet to do it. It could also just be that she's not able to clean herself so well but I'd check just to be sure, cats hate feeling unclean.

Can’t take it off she’s broke her leg
It would need an expert

Wouldn't she be quite poorly if it was infected? I'd ring the vet and ask for advice over the phone I think.

I did have a cat who had her jaw wired together and a cone on for a long time and to be perfectly honest (sorry Pads) she stank to high heaven because she couldn't wash herself.

I'd ring the vet and check. If it's really smelly, I wouldn't be happy.

I’m not but I do think it’s the litter tray partly. Vet is open Monday so I’ll ring them. Such a shame her three weeks aren’t up til the Monday after.

She’s always quite cold to touch compared to her sister. That’s not New but I’m noticing it more as she’s become very much s lap cat since we’ve both been ill. I just want it off tbh before I have to go in myself

She could just be stinky from the cast. However, if you're worried might be worth a call to out of hours vet for advice (and peace of mind). The phone lines are managed by vet nurses.

She sounds well. Smile I just always treat cats like humans - being both animals.

I remember the stench (no other word for it!) every time they took the cast off when I broke my leg badly & was in plaster for 5 months. OK I did have "fracture blisters" from the cast at first that ulcerated, but they healed up quite quickly and I was still getting this awful smell right up to when they released me from it for the last time. Dead skin, sweat that has nowhere to go etc is pretty rank.

You were right and i cant feel any worse than i do right now. Shes gone under so the vet can clean it then she will xray the breakage. She will give her an anyibiotic shot and thinks the would will have to be left exposed. The vet said the pot has been on too long. Im back at work tomorrow. I was covered by a sick note as well but told them i was fit for work like a fool.

Im waiting for the vet
to call.

Yes but i cant let them down they woukd never get the shift covered at such late notice. I just hope my insurance covers it for the same issue do you think it is the same problem on paper? Would rather not pay another excess if i can help it.

A wound that won't heal? On the face of it, it sounds like the same problem.

Oh - and don't be too brave and dedicated tomorrow if you have to go in. (Warn them that you may have come back too soon.)

FWIW when our cat broke his hind leg, which needed a pin in it, so he had surgery, our vet at first dressed every 3 days, I think. Then when the wound had healed, every week. And still it itched like mad apparently as our boy pulled his cast off with about 3 days to go...

The vet said he'd cleaned the paw up. Haha, cat spent another half hour licking all the grime off. 😁

Good luck OP.

To be fair, he might have been licking off 'vet smell'. (Some cats are terribly particular. Wink)

The nurse rang and said the fracture has healed beautifully but the vet is concerned the sutures won’t hold so she wants me back tomorrow. I’m on the bus now going to collect her.
