Is this plant poisonous to cats?

Hello everyone,

I have this house plant at home and caught my boy cat nibbling some of the leaves last week. He seems fine, but it suddenly struck me that it could be poisonous to cats and I'd better double-check! Unfortunately the plant was a gift and I've long since thrown away the card that came with it, so have no idea what it is! If anyone could shed any light that would be much appreciated.

Thanks as always!

I think some palm leaves are sharp and dangerous to swallow. Not quite clear if yours is.

Hi Betty, sorry, should have said - the leaves on this plant are soft, with no sharp bits at all!

It looks like a dragon tree to me; I forget its posh name. If it is, it won’t do kitty any good.

It's Dracaena or dragon tree, and yes it's toxic to cats and dogs.

Yikes - thanks all! I will remove it from the conservatory. Should I be worried that boy cat has already nibbled some of the leaves? This was just over a week ago and he seems perfectly OK, but I'm a bit concerned now...

My cat nibbled some leaves on my identical plant, and was sick not long afterwards, but it could have been coincidence, or getting rid of a fur ball, I suppose. I did google it, and the general consensus was that it was harmful to cats, so I removed it to the bathroom (nowhere else to put it, out of the cat's way!)

I’m not sure about that particular plant but I spent ages googling/ looking at pics of house plants and then removing any that may be toxic after realising that my stupid cat had a penchant for chewing anything with leaves. I’ve now got a house full of non- toxic but rather bedraggled looking plants with little catty teeth marks in them - but a very happy cat!
I don’t know how to provide links but if you google ‘house plants safe for cats’ there are lots of websites with lists and pictures of toxic/ non toxic ones. I also did the same for outdoor plants when I was planting my garden and now have a garden full of ‘safe plants’ - I was very pleased with myself until someone pointed out that as my cat is a bit of a roamer I would need to do this for the entire neighbourhood and surrounding area if I was going to be that particular! He’s not come to any harm yet so I’m hoping some kind of natural instinct may kick in if he ever comes across anything truly toxic ( fingers crossed)!
