The litter tray

Brought new kitten home - weed in litter tray but covered in pee - what next?

Hello

We brought home a beautiful kitten today. She was brilliant I getting into her litter tray for a pee but she left a trail of pee outside it. She then hid under the sofa and when she emerged her legs were covered in pee and she’s climbed everywhere in the lounge. It’s quite a strong smell. Do I need to clean her?

I’m not sure if she disliked the litter tray and maybe that’s why she didn’t finish her pee there? We are using clumping litter but her breeder used the non-clumping one.

I would be grateful for any advice.

I would probably stick with the same litter she is used to (and food as well for that matter) until she has adjusted to the home move. It means as many things as possible are familiar, despite being in a completely unfamiliar environment.

Make sure you have plenty of litter in the tray and that it is in a private area for her. She will probably groom herself and depending upon her personality, she might find a bath or wash quite upsetting.

Bless her. Its the change of litter i bet. Sometimes it scares them so they jump out. Have you got an uncovered tray? How old is she and wheres the photo?! Thems the rules.

Welcome to cat parenthood! Please dont clean her but perhaps check she hasn't peed under the sofa? Use the same litter. No hood/cover on the tray for now. She'll get more confident and you'll be able to do things differently in time.... Where's the pic and what's her name?

Stick to the same litter/ food and change by mixing old and new gradually

Introducing Nala Snuggles - gorgeous isn’t she?

Thank you all - so nice to see the support on here as I’ve been quite nervous.
Food is the same and traybis uncovered. She was digging in the tray and did a great job peeing there first time.

If you haven’t got a Feliway plug in, get one. It will really help her settle in and feel safe

Aww, she is lovely. I don't think it'll do any harm to wipe her messy legs down with a damp cloth, if she's still stinky. Hope she sleeps well for you tonightSmile

It's the shape of the face Each - no other breed has a squashed up nose quite like a Persian!
