Petplan quoted me 16 pounds for one kitten, can you help me shop with pets insurance please ?

I use Petplan. They are expensive but have paid out without quibbling every time I've claimed (which is quite a few!).

They’re not all the same, which is why they cost different amounts, so do be aware of what you’re getting. We have PetPlan and it’s £42 a month for two cats (not the cheapest plan) but it pays out no quibbles (although an £80 excess) and they’re covered for life. Lots of cheaper insurances will only pay for one condition for maybe a year, so if they get a long term condition like diabetes you’re stuffed. An animal in your care should be able to access treatment they need and not have it restricted, if you can’t afford proper insurance in case of illness you shouldn’t have a pet.

My Tesco one is a lifetime plan with £7500 cover and £60 excess which is under £25 per month for 2 cats

Calm down a bit paperdoll, would you. I'm shopping around and I'm asking for advice. All my pets are insured with petplans, just trying to look for better deal for the new kitten. Not everyone takes automatically on insurance when they acquire a pet and it's not our case at all.

I use Healthy Pets for my cat and two dogs. I've made two claims...£800 and £200 and they paid my vets direct with no hassle. The cost does creep up as your pets age but that's standard with any insurer.

I have did Tesco for 45 pounds for 3 kitties - unlimited and 4000 pounds per condition.

not Purely Pets. Been paying for two cats for a decade and have my first claim to make; they are making it virtually impossible for any claim to ever be met (they require animal's full lifetime medical history - so need to hope that vet from old house 12 years ago keeps their records for a long time or I won[t get paid)

Petplan because, though it is expensive, I have two aging Labradors (used to have three) and they cover a lot. We have had literally thousands of pounds paid out over the years, definitely way more than we’ve paid. Also as they are so well known and trusted our vet doesn’t mind claiming direct which, when the bill runs to a couple of thousand, is really helpful.

I would say £4000 is too low I would be looking for at least £7000 for a cat and £10,000 for a dog per condition.
As a vet I am regularly seeing all the bills for treatment both in house and referral.

Petplan here - because of all the points Paperdoll made. It's the chronic conditions thing that is the most crucial for me - most other insurance will only pay out up to a certain amount/time per condition and after that you're on your own. I pay about £45 per month for my two older cats and Petplan have been great whenever I've had to claim.

I used to work for petplan, and tbh you get what you pay for! The amount of people that would call up trying to reinstate insurance they'd cancelled because they had to claim and realised they're new policy wouldn't cover things or wouldn't cover for life. By which time it's too late!

I agree with Lone, £4K is quite low. We claimed £3.7K for Harry's jaw problems and it could have been more as at one point he was going to be referred to Supervet.

I'm with Tesco, a recommendation from here. I have not used it but others on here gave positive feedback.

I'd stick with petplan. The small print in many of the others will catch you out if you end up with any chronic conditions. Although any will cover a condition up to the limit, once it is time to renew they count it as a pre-existing condition and won't cover in the new policy and if you try and change at that point a new provider won't cover it either. We've stayed with petplan for our now 11 yr old cat and have more than had our money back and because we have never switched she is still fully covered for anything that develops. The other one I have found that is similar is John Lewis and we have gone with them for the dogs, haven't yet had to claim but have used some of their other insurance products without issue. I'm sure Tesco don't cover after a year.

Tesco do cover after a year as long as you take the premier cover. It is a lifetime plan too
