How often do you clean out the litter tray?

By that I mean empyting it, washing/cleaning it and refilling with fresh cat litter.

I have two indoor cats using one litter tray. I usually clean it out once a week. However I recently had an op and it's been 2 weeks now. Thinking I will attempt to clean it out tomorrow.

Two indoor cats need more than one tray. I scoop out regularly. Used to do a full clean out once a week but now do it less frequently. My cats go out though.

I pick the poo out every day and clean the whole thing once a week but to be honest it would probably last longer. I have a covered tray and I can never smell it but I only have the one cat

DM has two indoor cats and two litter trays. She removes a poop as and when she notices it (usually each morning as they tend to do their poops each morning), and does a full clean of the trays once a week.

Just to be clear - I obviously scoop out poo and wee as needed! I normally scoop about 4 times a day!

I have a covered cat litter tray too and it is quite big. I have heard that cats should have a litter tray each, but it really wouldn't be practical and they are both happy to use it.

I use clumping litter so that I can remove all their wees.

Wolfiefan whenever I stay away for the night, I leave out an extra litter tray. Then they both carry on using the one!!

Wolfiefan it's good you are reiterating the guidance, but do bear in mind that some cats ignore the guidance! I've had 2 litter trays out since day 1 with my pair (indoors) but they have never ever touched one of them - except the time one jumped off the sofa awkwardly and landed in the "spare" .

We use clumping litter (Sainsbury's works really well) - no need to wash the tray out - just remove clumps & crap as required (minimum daily).
Also we have one large litter tray for the cats. Never had any cat complaints about sharing the facilities.

I use the Tesco clumping litter which isn't bad...but still feel the litter tray needs to be washed. I can be a bit extra about things though which is why I asked on here. I did manage to clean the tray out today though, even though I'm meant to keep such activities to a minimum.

I've also tried having a second tray for my two but they just used the same one anyway. It is an xxl one. I don't clean out completely very often as mine have started doing the toilet outside more. At the moment about every 2 weeks, prior to that once a week. We use eco clumping litter

I don't wash the tray but use litter spray and kitchen roll

dementedpixie I think mine is probably an XXL one but always on the lookout for a larger one - where did you get yours? I didn't know there was such a thing as litter spray. I use antibacterial floor wipes on mine, sometimes with a green scourer if needed.

We have two cats who rarely go outside, and only one large-ish covered tray. Poo gets picked up every day and cleaned out properly once a week. We find that catsan is the best litter for keeping away smells (although a pain in the arse for bouncing out of the tray).

Our cats are 12 and have survived this far with only one tray, they seem perfectly happy and never ever have "accidents".

Four indoor cats, two big covered trays, plus an empty little one for my weirdo who will only pee in there.
Scooped daily, fully emptied and cleaned every 3/4 weeks.
I use world's best litter.

I use tray liners (with a layer of newspaper to stop them scratching through the bottom after a freshly washed kitchen floor/pierced liner disaster).
I poo pick daily and change the whole lot weekly we have two big covered trays for each cat so use two bags of litter per week.

My cats certainly have not read the catty rule book..

We have two cats, one tray.
Only one cat uses said tray, other cat must go outside, I’m not privy to his personal habits
I wash the tray once per day, she craps, whole thing gets chucked out, tray washed, replaced. She only uses it once per day though.
We use wood pellets and have an open tray in the kitchen (the horror).

I scoop as required and full change about once every 10 days-2 weeks. More often in winter as its used much more. In warm weather the tray barely gets used now we are down to one cat.

Our tray is a Catit Jumbo, primarily because the Lion used to make a habit of sitting in the tray and pissing out, bless him . It's the biggest I could find and contains everything nicely.

Delayed answer, apologies. I only ever fully clean the tray if one of cats pees (or craps) over the edge. Fortunately my current two are clearly good shots so I haven't had to clean it since my old boy died. I use a large plastic shallow storage box (30×20 inches) rather than a designed litter tray. Never get any odour problems other than the obvious when one of them has just used the tray.

When he was using his tray exclusively - I probably did a full change and clean every 3 weeks if Cats Best (scooping clumps several times a day).
