Name needed!

Having recently lost our lovely 17 year old cat, we have a cat-shaped hole in our lives and will soon be re-homing a beautiful 2 year old cat.

She is a lovely girl, who is essentially black all over but with a small smattering of white hair on her front - not enough to be a white patch, but just a few white hairs within the black. She is currently called Smudge. I'm not keen on this name for a few reasons - firstly it was the name of my ILs' cat years ago (which was a pretty horrible cat which neither of us have fond memories of); secondly it is a bit ubiquitous; and thirdly - probably most importantly - everyone assumes it's a boy! (there's also the fact that I don't actually like the name).

I'm pretty sure that as soon as she settles in, she will be very unlikely to be called by her actual name - but she still needs one that we like, and which suits her (for the vets and cattery, if nothing else!)

So - any suggestions for a female name for a lovely black cat? (I've already suggested Agnes, which has been overruled).

(To pre-empt any questions - I don't have a photo, but will share when she comes home. Just conjure up in your minds a pretty black cat with lovely pale green eyes, and you're just about there).

I was wary posting without a pic... but I don't have one! I promise I'll post one when we get her. But she needs a name before that...

Eden. I once knew a black kitty called Eden and it just seemed to suit her blackness. I think it’s such a pretty name.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far! I like lots of them, but it's got to be a girl's name (rather than a unisex) as so many people assume she is a boy! I love Raven (for example) - but that could be either...

People at work have come up with
Mabel
Connie
Sadie
Meg

DH is a big fan of LOTR/The Hobbit and Star Wars (and Game of Thrones), so I've been looking at those for inspiration for unusual female names - but not finding anything which jumps out. The trouble with naming a cat is that so many 'human' names (which I need if it's to be definitively female) are taken by people we know, or their kids, and it would feel like we were naming her after someone!

We hopefully pick her up on Saturday, so will get her home and decide then (and post a pic, of course).

There are definitely a few contenders here :)

Peggotty is fab! (is it from a famous novel, it sounds familiar?)
Love Betsy too

Olive is another one that feels like it could fit.

We're collecting her on Saturday morning, so will 'bestow' her with a new name over the weekend before registering with the vet. I'll be sure to post a pic (assuming she doesn't spend all weekend hiding away).

Ps @YoungYolandaYorgensen39 if I ever end up with a black cat again I’m stealing Astrid from you 🙂Hope that’s ok

I like Astrid too, but it's the name of my neighbour who lives over my back fence, so I can't stand at the back door and shout it!

It's so hard finding names that don't belong to either friends or their children (or pets) or colleagues/clients. And then there are people from the choir that I sing in or the running club - just those 2 rule out about 150 names!!

CanYou - Peggotty is a character in David Copperfield.

Steal away Angel - I’ve always thought Astrid is a cool name.

LOVE Scout! To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my favourite books.

Is it definitively female do you think? (I guess so if you've read TKAM, but maybe not otherwise?)

I think it's my new frontrunner - thanks!
