Cat has just come home covered in petrol

And run off again as he somehow managed to escape through the locked cat flap.

I've tried wiping with Ecover washing up liquid and will give it another go when he comes in again.

Is there anything else I should do?

Are you calling him in? He'll try to lick it off & then he's in trouble.

I think you should try and bath him. It will be difficult and a two person job with gloves. Poor thing. There is a risk if he starts grooming and ingests the petrol.

One of my mogs came home last winter with his back paws covered in engine oil. I managed to grab him and wrap him in a sacrificial towel and scrubbed off most if the oil
Then I put him in about 4" water in the bath. I wet him and shampooed him several times with cheap Aldi shampoo. He was very good and didn't mind the bath but it took two of us to dry him with a hairdryer. He needed another toweling down but most of the oil had gone. He didn't get a chance to try and wash himself and suffered no ill effects. He did remove most of his tail hair over the next few months and it's only regained its former glory recently.

Having said all that, get him to a vet if you can. My cat arrived home well after closing time and there was nothing else I could do at that time. I did phone the vet the following morning but there was nothing else they could suggest.

Proper washing up liquid ASAP and straight to the vet. Petrol is toxic if ingested but can also burn skin. Good luck OP

My cat once came home covered in engine oil and the vet advised me to rub swarfega into his fur then rinse it. It was a bit of a task but it did work.

Our cat walked through thick exterior gloss paint once and we contacted vet who advised we had to bring her in and they shaved her paws. Only thing that would have taken it off was white spirit but that was just as toxic.

He's had 3 baths and seems OK - he's not too adverse to water & is now wrapped in a towel. I don't think he licked any...I'll keep an eye on him and take him to the vet tomorrow if he doesn't seem OK.
