Worming tablets or spot-on treatment for tapeworm?

One of the cats has tapeworm (well, they probably both do). Which is more effective, tablets or spot-on treatment? Will either of them be preventative? Or will they just kill off what they have now?

I used tablets last time one of mine had a tapeworm. Cleared in no time.

think it's milbemax tablets we use.

We dose them every 3 months too
