Sadly we've decided to have our 20 year old cat PTS today. He's now little more than skin and bone, he's fully incontinent, has had to be bathed 4 times in the last 2 weeks (which he hates) due to him lying in his own crap, and he's now become very unstable on his back legs. He's also not got much eyesight, I suspect he is deaf and definitely has signs of dementia. It's been a difficult decision because he still is eating, spends all day outside, and still responds a bit to us - but he has gone downhill over the last few weeks so we are finally in agreement that the time has come. We've had him since 8 weeks (with two of his siblings who lasted about 14 and 17 years)
Picture of him from about a couple of weeks ago enclosed.

Phoned my vet and was quoted £170.53 for euthanasia, individual cremation and return of ashes - more or less as expected.
Purely due to timing issues I phoned another local vet with slightly longer opening hours - quote for the same work £317.18. Note to all - worth asking the prices of 'standard' treatments since prices clearly vary considerably.

What a beautiful old boy/ What a wonderful long life you've given him. I know how hard it is but you are doing the kindest thing for your special friend. Big squeeze for him. K

Back from vets. He went very quickly and quietly and the vet was absolutely great.

So sorry. He looked lovely. And loved!

Perhaps the second quote was including a home visit? My cat was PTS this year too and I did it at home and it cost more. Maybe not, but it was about what I paid including home visit.

Sorry for your loss, but concur with the others that you did the best thing for him and he no doubt had a wonderful life Flowers

Thanks all - your kind thoughts are much appreciated.

MysteryMacavity - to confirm the higher price was not for a home visit - just a more expensive vet. I'm in the southeast so I don't expect things to be cheap but I was shocked at the difference)

Glad the experience wasn't too traumatic. I went through it with my 18 year old not long ago. Fly high puss! Take care and be kind to yourselves. It takes ages to get used to it.

I'm sorry. We lost old girl at 19. It's hard when it's not a case of immediate and obvious suffering (if that makes sense.) Our vet mentioned her dignity. She had none. It was time to let her go.
RIP beautiful boy. No baths over the rainbow bridge.
OP very sorry for your loss. Flowers
