Cattery lost my cat

Has anyone experienced this before? Currently away on hols and just got an email to say one of my cats has escaped from the cattery (hole in the roof of the pen walkway). Gutted as I put them in there to keep them safe as our last kitten got run over when we had friends feeding them.

An EMAIL? I would be absolutely raging.

I'm so sorry :(

Do you live far from the cattery? Could Houdini have gone home?

We'll they said they tried to call but I'm in the middle of nowhere (abroad) so only have wifi. Nightmare

This happened local to me a couple of years ago. I remember it well because the local papers picked it up and the bad publicity did a lot of harm to the cattery. Call the papers.
This is horrendous really, how could they be so negligent?? They might make huge efforts to find your cat if they think there'll be bad publicity.
I really hope you find the cat. This shouldn't have happened.

WTF?! Am sorry this has happened but that's pretty crap on their behalf to not check the pens. Have they offered to help find him?

Omg what a nightmare. I've never heard anything like it. Is it in the middle of nowhere? What are they doing about it?

This is disgusting. I've worked in catteries and part of the daily cleaning should be to check for any damage/ escape routes.

Will you be going home early to look for them?

No experience of a cat escaping, but a kennels we used to board our dogs at lost someone else's dog while on a walk. They didn't tell the owners immediately and had a lot of bad press. Didn't use them again and we were good customers with several animals.

Really hope your cat turns up safe.

I second nick, I can't believe they emailed you something so upsetting.
What is the cattery doing? Is your cat chipped? Are they out searching for darling cat? Can someone check to see if it has managed to get home?

Your op is far more restrained and detached than mine would be, that's for sure!

Gutted wouldn't touch what I'd be feeling.

Unfortunately my daughter now knows as we just happened to be talking about the cats over dinner when I saw the email come in (apparently they tried to call but I had no service) and remarked on it being about the cat. My son then read the first last of the email over my shoulder
to my astounded family at the dinner table. Talk about ruining the holiday. I looked at getting home to start searching but the cost is just horrendous and we simply can't afford it. I'm so mad at the cattery for doing this to us, I was only saying to my neighbours the day before we left that we were leaving them in the care of the cattery as we couldn't go through another lost cat experience in again whilst being so far from home. The cattery say they are out looking and will put up posters and they knew about the hole Confused but didn't think a cat could squeeze through it

The cattery should be using its contacts to promote a search - vets, rescue centres, Community and local fb pages, cat homing charities etc. I regularly see missing/stolen pet posts on fb.

Is it in a built up area or is it in the middle of the countryside like mine?

Oh you poor things, I hope he's found safe and sound soon.

My cat went missing when he was being looked after by out cat sitter while we were in America a couple of years ago. Thankfully he was back within a couple of days and I accept these things happen. I couldn't accept it from a cattery though, especially if they admitted they knew about the hole! That's shocking. I would be leaving them bad reviews everywhere I could.

I do hope your cat is found safe and sound (and quickly!) for you Flowers

Your travel insurance might cover you going home - it would be worth a call.

If not i would be expecting the cattery to cover the cost of at least one adult tbh.

I would be so angry, it's so completely unacceptable.

Is your cat insured? My insurance covers holiday cancellation but I don't know if it would cover flying back but it could be worth finding out.

This is awful! I hope they find your cat! Shock

You said you can't fly home, so while cattery and anyone else who can help at home lead the search for cat (could a neighbour put something on social media local to your house or the cattery) you will need to start preparing yourselves and the dc for not finding dcat. The kids need to see that you are angry and upset, but also that you know what to do, have a plan of action and can cope. Encourage them to try to enjoy the holiday regardless, as being active is a good coping strategy. I really hope he finds his way home.

I really hope they find her. I have a friend who runs a cattery and she says this is her worst nightmare.

I can just imagine what you're going through as this happened to us on our honeymoon.

The chattery should have insurance to get a team of searchers out looking for the cat, as well as money to publicly advertise the missing cats.

Hopefully your cat will return for food soon.
It took 5 weeks for our one cat to be found. He was within 50metres of the cattery and was eventually lured into a home with fresh meat.

Is your cat micro chipped? One of our cats went missing for 18mths (living with a little old lady) and we were reunited when she was scanned.

OP - Where in the country do you live?

If it is near me I could make some posters for you and put them up.

Have you let your neighbours know? There's a chance Houdini could try to get home. Maybe they could keep a look-out and let him in if he turns up, or, at least, put some food down for him.

I hope the cattery have phoned all the vets in the local area. I'd suggest if someone does take him in that the vet holds on to him and the cattery pays the cost. I wouldn't trust them with him again.

Hope you manage to enjoy the rest of your holiday, somehow. Hugs.

Worst nightmare. You must feel so helpless.
Do you have pet insurance? Our dog policy has an area that covers missing pets.
Is the cattery location rural or urban?
How long has cat been at large?

I've let the chip company know and the cattery have had a search party out yesterday and today, told the vets, put it on social media so they are doing their best I guess. Thanks PersianCatLady for the offer but I don't want to out where I am! He's not insured. I talked to DH and we've decided it's best not to go home and join the search as making a fun holiday for our 2 DC is more important right now. That was a hard decision as I was ready to pack my backs and send the bill to the cattery.
