Cats with white ears - sunscreen

I was told by a vet years ago to use factor 50 baby sunscreen (so no damage if they lick it off) all over the cats white ears during the summer/any sunny days. I'm the only person I know who does this and feel like a bit of a nutter when I tell people I put sunscreen on the cats ears. Please tell me I'm not the only one? Blush

Some people certainly don't. And a lot of people don't. And some of those cats end up with skin cancer. If your cat will allow you to do it it's well worth the bother.

I did with my last white eared cat. In purple kids sunscreen 😁

I wish we had done it with our pink nosed cat, but we didn't know and the poor thing died of skin cancer. I doubt he'd have ever let us if we tried though.

You should definitely do it. I've seen a few cats with skin cancer on their ears and it's not pleasant.

i had a white cat years ago and the vet told me to put calamine lotion on her ears to prevent sunburn

If you can do it then you should. I've seen lots of cats with missing ears through skin cancer. I try to do it with my black and white cats but she rubs it all off within a few minutes. I just hope enough sinks in to help a bit.

I have two white beasts and I suncream ears and nose the bridge of their little pink noses. They seem to love the attention Grin

I had a white cat and used baby sunscreen with her as well. Apparently you can buy special pet sunscreen (from America of course) but the vet said the baby stuff would work just as well.

We had a white cat and had to do this to him. we got one of those coloured sticks as it was less messy. He didn't like it much but was pretty good about it. He would get really sunburnt if we didn't do it.

Yep, I used to do this when I had a cat with white ears. Apart from anything it would be painful for them if their little ears get sunburnt.

We used the purple stick. He thought it as an affront to his dignity.

we had a big ginger and white beast of a creature, and he used to have his ears sunblocked, when he went roaming. I gave up doing it when we moved here as he sort of gave up going far and staying out, plus, NE of Scotland...what IS summer??

I've adopted a cat who had her ears mostly removed because of skin cancer. I'd definitely do it.

never had a white-eared cat but put suncream on the white guinea-pig's ears when she is out on the grass (with her little black-eared friends) on a sunny day. She just looks resigned to it!

Doobigetta · 29/05/2017 18:08

I used to try to put it on my boy's pink nose, but he just licked it off.

Haha! He does not look impressed toddler Grin

The 3 of mine have white ears; they argue with me every morning but put up with me doing it. Although if I try to put some on their noses, then the claws come out :(.

I'll keep putting it on so ... I just won't mention it to non-cat-owners again Grin

He was the most regal cat you could ever meet. Shame my childhood cars were pre mobile phone days so I have practically no photos of them.

I'd never choose a white cat for this reason.

Nevertheless we ended up with one Hmm The joys of rescuing! I put sunscreen on her (ultrasun) but it's a real PITA because she hates being touched on someone else's terms thanks to her horrible start to life.

He looks like he was very much the Prince toddler. I don't have many pics of my childhood cats either :(. One I had for 21 years and she was an absolute beauty.

Oh she's lovely little dote lady :)

Mims - I wanted to avoid white eared cats too. I now have 3 Hmmand they have a pension fund. (I didn't know until first vet visit with two of them that it was ok to put sunscreen on them)

You're absolutely not a 'bit of a nutter' for doing it. If they'll let you, just carry on. Smile
