The litter tray

Cat holding in wees and poos

Cat won't go out in the rain and cold. He has a litter tray but doesn't use it other than for a very occasional wee, never for poos. I'm worried about him holding in wees and poos. He's healthy, eating and seems fine. Should I put some compost in the litter tray? Should I be worried? He hasn't been out or used the tray today.

I'd put him outside and shut the door. Maybe I'm a bit mean though.

I'd take a bet he is weeing somewhere... probably the bath or shower drain .. one of mine does that (and yes has a litter tray too..she is just naughty)

And check any pot plants! I'm sure he can hold a poo for a day or so. Mine are all capable of holding on if they don't fancy the weather!

You could try the litter tray in a different place, try different litter or just newspaper.
If he hasn't passed urine in a 24 hour period, you NEED to take him to the vet. It can be very dangerous and he will need to have his bladder emptied.

I've heard of people using soil or sand in the tray to help convince an outdoor cat to use a tray. Sounds a bit messy, but if the alternative is the cat using the bath mat or something I guess it would be worth a try.

(My last cat used the bath mat Hmm )

Mine is very reluctant to venture out too in the cold or wet, but will use his tray when desperate. He managed a couple of hours this morning before it started raining. Some days he holds on till mid afternoon then is out all of one minute...
He is also eating loads so getting steadily bigger!
