Hey I've lurked so long now I've probably forgot all the short words for stuff so appologies. Probably a bit of a ramble coming but just need to talk I guess feel devestated.

Not sure if anyone will remember me or the missy but she was found, or she found us as the case appeared in may 2012. She appeared in the garden heavily pregnant, I was 39 weeks pregnant and no cats rescues would take her. Finances were tight at the time and the cat rescues couldn't offer any help but with the help of some amazing mn's we all managed to get her sorted through the end of the pregnancy, ultrasound and the birth of 5 babies! We loved her and she loved us. Her babies grew then found new homes but she's been with us ever since. Her and my son are best buddies she sleeps with him, plays with him. I've had a daughter now too and she's amazing with her too. She used to lay next to her while she was feeding and stroke her head.

Something happened to her before christmas and she really changed was scared and skittish around us it lasted a few days so we kept her in until she was more like herself. We then let her out and she didn't come back for 3 weeks! I presumed she had been cat napped because she's lovely and doesn't have a collar anyone would love her! She came back one night and was starving and skinny. We was going to keep her in but she got out the next night and went missing for another week. We noticed she had turned into a really messy eater on the one night she was back and then again last night even skinner.

I sat and watched her and she couldn't open her mouth to eat was just licking things all over the place. We've taken her to he vets today and shes had several broken ribs that have started healing which ties into the timing of her behaviour changing. She jaw is 'fused' shut it won't open. She's been starving for over a month and we've not known Sad, she's got something wrong with her eyes, cataract in one and something strange happening with the other possibly brain related? The vet said she isn't sure and is going to call in the next two days as she's never experienced anything like it.

I know I've only seen her three times in the last month but I feel awful how didn't I pick up on it when she came in that one night? How did I let her slip out without noticing. Why didn't I take her to the vets when she started acting strange.

Im devestated and I have no idea what to tell my son when his he from school SadSadSad I'm sure she's going to have to be pts. I'm fighting back tears in the vets I'm a grown woman with children and I'm crying over the stray cat I didnt even want to keep to start with. Kind of felt I should come and put it on here as I doubt people want to hear about it irl and I also kind of feel like we owe our time with her to all those mn's at the start so if any of those are still around they would know too :( :(

Shit, OP, I remember this thread. It was one of the first I read when I joined MN. I was struck by your kindness and it sounds like she's had an awesome life you and your family.

I have no advice sorry but I just wanted to say you're a very kind person and you shouldn't blame yourself in any way. Imagine the awful life Missy would've had if she hadn't found you. You saved her from that. You should feel really proud of that.

Hope someone comes to give some advice soon
Xxx

Cats really really cover up - if at all possible. You had her to the vet as soon as you realised something was up so you have nothing to chide yourself for. And it was your house she came back to. She knows where she's loved.

Could she have been hit by a car? Poor thing, poor you.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. I'm new here so never saw the original thread, but you sound like a very kind person who took wonderful care of Missy. Please don't blame yourself for what's happening now! As the previous poster said, cats hide things so well. I lost my two cats last April...one I knew had cancer and I was so focused on trying to save him I didn't notice that his brother had started losing weight. He had developed cancer too (?!) and I lost them within two days of each other. I felt so guilty that I didn't notice anything wrong with my second. They really do hide illness so well. Missy obviously knows you love her and it sounds like she's had a very happy life with your family! Sending you a big hug. I know how heartbreaking this is.

I'm SO sorry Sad

You were lovely to her and gave her such a happy home and love. Agree with PPs that cats really go to every effort to hid when they are unwell or injured.

I hope so much that she can recover and have good quality of life. Be guided by the vet and if you do have to say goodbye try to keep in mind that she knows how loved and cared for she was.

Big hugs Flowers

I agree it's not easy to tell if a cats poorly, I remember your original thread.

You can't do anything if she's not actually there though.

I'm so sorry Flowers

It's very hard to tell with cats, it's part of their nature to try and hide illness and injury. Please don't beat yourself up about it, you've done everything you can!

On the practical side of things, get the highest calorie food you can and blend it with warm water to make a slurry. She should be able to lap that up and it'll keep her going.

I'm so sorry.

She loves you a lot of wouldn't have come home. It is common for cats to go away and die alone.
We are all rooting for her.
Years ago my cat went missing for ten nights in October. We went out shouting every night - he came back with his back leg hanging off. The vet said us shouting prob gave him the strength to get home. He had it amputated and lived a fair few years. He was a total hit where we lived. Cats know when we are helping them - she will know you are doing your best xxx

Poor cat and poor you. Lovely you've given her a home. I hope the vet can help her.

The vets sent her back home with us until she can figure something out and be sure on it she wants to try and get further advice herself at the moment before doing or trying anything.

We have some royal canine tin build up stuff from the vet that we're mixing with cat milk and she's lapping that up well enough.

Off the top of her head when she just thought it was broken ribs and jaw not opening she thought steroids may be worth a shot to see if they fixed the jaw and if not then tube feeding her. I guess that may all change with the eye/brain stuff too.

Tube would require a general anaesthetic though and she may not want to keep it in place and if not may have to wear a cone on her head all the time?

She's really chilled so I think she would possibly be fine with the tube but I doubt she could go out chasing down small animals to bring home in the wee hours with it 😂 As much as I'd love her to sit around with us all day like she has today is that really a good thing for her? She's never been a 247 house cat. But even so if she didn't keep it in I've then not only got to have her house bound all the time but with a cone on. And the 1/2 cataracts which I guess means she's going blind Sad

She's spent the day cuddling up to the baby on the bed then sitting on my son's back when he got home from
School. I kind of feel torn between I want to keep her forever and anything reasonably to make that happen but then feeling bad for her for wanting that. A life confined to the house with a cone unable to see isn't her life at all. However if I go for pts option i feel like I'm practically ending her myself and feel awful for my boy mainly because he knows she's alive now and he wouldn't understand the issues of her quality of life.

I've never been in the situation with any pet or would it come to where if nothing seems like it would work they wouldn't give me a option they just tell you that's what needs to be done?

Oh I remember you Sad

No advice, but please know that she is one very lucky little kitty to have found you. Please never doubt that.

The vet will be able to guide you. They aren't going to put a healthy animal to sleep, you should be able to trust them.

Sending you a huge hug, it's absolutely awful when a furry member of the family is unwell Sad

When is the vet due to contact you again?

Have pm'd you.

If she is eating, and comfortable (which she seems to be, if she is interacting with your children) I wouldn't jump to any conclusions yet about the future. Wait and see what the vet says. Thinking of you.

I was on your original thread! How lovely that she's given you so much happiness for all these years!
But poor her - and you - for the recent problems. I think vets are normally good at giving a pretty strong steer as to what they would do, if you ask them.

I'm very sorry and would also advise not rushing into anything. Cats can adapt very well to all sorts of things, particularly going blind, and can still have a nice life.

Give her can to recover and adapt and take things as they come and don't rush into euthanasia.

That's good she's eating. See what the vet comes back with she obviously wants to decide on the best plan and do some research and possibly speak to some specialists (who I discovered via our vets tend to be more than happy to share their expertise). Write any questions you have down so you don't forget.
Our cat had a feeding tube in short term after surgery mainly for top up feeds. It was managable but I was pleased when it was out, she didn't have a cone as the tube was kept under a dressing.
Lots of fuss for your cat too.

This has just popped back up on threads I'm on. I hadn't previously seen the other replies sorry.

She is still with us Smile completely blind in one eye but she's eating fine now. I can't quite remember how she started eating but we were and still are very pleased
