The litter tray

Lost kitten

Our two cats are 6 months old and we haven't let them out yet. But last night someone broke in (we are away) and neighbour who is feeding them says one of the 2 cats is now missing - presumably escaped through the open window.

They are chipped but obviously haven't been out before, it's very cold and there is no way for her to get back in, unless neighbour stays at ours to keep an eye out, which they obviously can't do all day.

Come and cheer me up with tales of returned cats as I'm miles away, dealing with 3 distressed DC while trying not to panic myself.

I'm sorry this has happened to you.can you get your neighbor to put kitten's bed outside? It will both give them a warm place to sleep and the scent will help them find their way home.

Most areas have a lost pet group on Facebook. Can you post a photo on there?

Most cats arent daft and i'm sure your kitten will find their way home.

There is food out. She sleeps with her sister, usually on a dining chair, occasionally in a cardboard box, but not in her bed.

No sign yet, but hoping she might still turn up. She disappeared over night so she must be hungry by now Sad

I'm sure she'll come back. Are you going home now?

We can't, for complicated reasons, until Friday. We'll leave as soon as we can, but are 5+ hours away so Friday afternoon is earliest we'll be back. Neighbour is staying at ours so hoping missing kitty will reappear but am V worried and feeling bad for her sister...

So sorry to hear about your cat.
I had something similar happen to my boys. One of them managed to get away.
Ask your neighbor if they could keep some food out and their bed. She'll be back home soon hopefully.
My cat came back after 3 days, his brother stood by the window and screamed to alert us that he was back.
Good luck :)
Also, try not to panic. She's probably just exploring and will be back when she gets hungry.

Thank you. Glad that yours returned after three days, both cos you got cat back and it gives me hope.

Sister is apparently crying for her at window Sad. Feel so bad this has happened and I'm not there.

God, I thought parenting guilt was bad. Why have I added pet owning guilt to it?!?

Pet owning guilt is just as bad as parenting guilt. Trust me.
I sat in the street and sobbed when mine went missing. Walked around the street for hours calling out for him and people eventually thought I was mental.
Even a tiny cut on them, and I am running to the phone to go to the vets or get the vet home.
Its crazy but owning a pet is pretty much in the same line as being a parent. Its the responsibility and the love we have for them.

Can your neighbour shake the kitten's bed outside and put some used cat litter out too? The kitten may pick up the scent of home better. How awful for you Sad.

Are you on Facebook? If so join all your local selling sites, freebies pages, swap pages, community pages etc and post photos of her on all of them stating what happened and asking people to contact you or neighbour if they see her.

Usually a cat who gets out in these circumstances doesn't go far but it might just hide for a couple of days before trying to reveal itself. My kitten got out and late on the 2nd day it meowed in the bushes near the house and I tempted it out with tuna. Don't panic it may well be just fine where it is

Was anything stolen from the house

Report
YoullNeverWeeAlone · 28/12/2016 17:18

Nothing stolen as far as we know. Alarm went off when they left kitchen and they left, so they only went in 2 rooms. Neighbour can't see anything that's been disturbed, so hopefully house is still ok.

Still no sign of kitty though, but will get some litter put out to help with finding way home. Fingers crossed.

The alarm and whole invasion will have spooked little kitty. She'll be back when she senses it's safe

not a kitten but we've just moved somewhere semi-rural. after a couple of weeks settling in our big ginger-and-white boy was spooked and went missing for 5 days.

we put food out every night and called him incessantly. he came back one morning and ate everything in sight, and didn't go out again for about a week!

i really hope your kitty comes back soon.

With all the upheaval she'll likely wait for you to come back before she comes home.

If you have a cat carrier, can you ask yoir neighbor to put your other kitten in and put her in the garden? Hearing her friend shouting might just coax kitty back sooner.

Neighbours have found her! She is safe and well, just very hungry and a bit scared. Was beginning to think she was gone for good so very, very happy.
