Brown patch on cat's eye

Cat is an exotic short hair, about three. We've had her about a year and she was like this when we got her. There is a brown scaly patch on her eye that the vet called a sequestrum. She has drops but I'm not sure what they are doing for her. It partially covers her iris so must be affecting her sight. Her other eye seems ok. For her part she's probably used to it by now.

Apparently it's a problem with the breed.

Vet says it can be removed but it's pricey.

Anybody any experience of this or of their cat having one of these removed?

I've been lucky - never had a cat with one.

Is she showing any signs of pain? And what is your vet actually recommending ?

It doesn't seem to bother her at the moment and vet didn't seemed concerned. She's so young though and it must partially be affecting her sight.
Was just wondering about the pros and cons of having it removed.

The cost is a huge factor, we have no pet insurance and even if we got it now it wouldn't be covered. There's also the risk from the anaesthetic, especially with her poor little smushed up nose.

Was just wondering if anybody had any experience or thoughts?

She's a Persian? (I believe that they have the highest risk of sequestra occurrence, if so.)

I think that the thing that would concern me is that it's not necessarily a static condition. Could you afford a feline ophthalmologist checking it out?

By the way - have you informed the breeder of the issue? (If you know who they are.)

If that's the case we will monitor it. Presumably the drops are to try and stop it getting worse then?

Don't know what she is, or where she came from, exotic short hair is what we were told. She is cream with mink brown paws, tail and face. Her face is a bit smushed up and flat and her nose is tiny.

Her original owner didn't want her Sad

Has she been spayed herself? (You were talking about possible GA issues.)

I don't know. I'll see if I can find out. If she has then that's good for tolerating the anaesthetic.

Exotic short hairs are Persians. Need pictures! I love them. Sorry can't give any advice on the eye problem though.

My mum's cat had one and it eventually went away on its own. It did take a few months to go.

If that minky patch on her flank is on one side only, it might just be a fading spay area regrowth. I think that that's where I'd check first if I were a vet, anyway.
