Our gorgeous big softy....

Our big, handsome, over friendly, velvet-pawed softy of a Siamese was knocked over and killed in the next street this morning. Sad

Dh got a call from the vets saying someone had found him and taken him along to get scanned for his chip.

We've picked him up now: he was hit on the head so at least it was quick, but apart from the scrape there, he just looks like he is sleeping.

This was the last photo I'd taken of him, a few weeks ago, when he'd taken to sitting in one of the planters at the door that I hadn't got round to planting up ("grow your own cat" Wink).

Our other (older) cat is busy hiding under a bed upstairs (normally she's a lap-seeking missile): she know something is amiss. She's due in to the vets tomorrow for teeth extraction under anaesthetic. She's overdue her teeth being sorted and we're also hoping it will sort her over-grooming (her fur is a state at the moment) - but having stopped the gum/teeth problems, the stress of losing her companion might mean that she won't break the grooming habit.

Ds will be devastated when he gets him from school. He loved the fact that he was "his" cat - we got him when he was 7 - 9 years ago.

I know you're not supposed to have favourites, but of the 5 Siamese that dh and I have owned served, and the many Siamese that I've had since my childhood, he stands out as a character.

We used to Sadhave to walk ds to the bottom of the driveway every morning to stop boycat from following him to school. He was a tart in that he'd go up to anyone. He never, ever put his claws out except in one circumstance: he'd put out a single claw on to my back when I was in bed to make me lift the duvet up, so that he can go under the covers. Never dh, always me! Grin

My SIL just lost her cat yesterday too. Was killed by a car. About two months after another one of their cats was killed by a car. Heartbroken doesn't cover it.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your beautiful boy cat. I think I remember you posting about the polite claw as a request to lift the duvet up. Flowers

We lost a cat in similar circumstances a long time ago - a lovely British Blue.

Ds broke down when we told him Sad Initially didn't want to see him but then came back downstairs and asked for time alone with him. Could hear him sobbing in the room Sad

He'd thought at first we were going to tell him that the other cat had had to be put to sleep (got confused as her operation is actually tomorrow). We could all have coped with that so much better.

He's the first cat that ds can remember getting. The older Siamese was bought when ds was 3, to replace our first male (one of a boy/girl sibling Siamese pair) who had died of kidney failure (also aged 9 Sad).

Boycat was bought because the 9 year female cat (from the original pair) didn't want to play with the young cat. The irony was the the younger cat hates the new cat and for the period that we had 3 Siamese, would have nothing to do with him.

It was only when the oldest cat died and she was getting lonely that she, very gradually, started to warm to him until eventually they would sleep entwined. It was funny at first: after previously having hissed at him any time he went close to her (so both he and she used to get their company from the old cat, who would sleep in the middle), she would gradually tolerate him sleeping closer and closer. Initially back to back - so she could pretend it wasn't him and just get the warmth, until eventually they started grooming each other and properly sleeping together.

Is she bonded to anyone in the family? If not, or not particularly, I wonder if you might ask DS to have a special care for her?

She's a lap seeking missile, so will find the first lap available Smile - she's not fussy Grin

Ds spent last night cuddling her - dh and I had a commitment we couldn't get out of Sad

It was horrible this morning when ds went off to school - dh still walked him to the bottom of the drive even though there was no need. Ds walked off in tears.

I've just taken her to the vet for her op. Paying the extra for a full blood panel and IV fluids - anything to reduce the risk.

Dh spoke to the lady from the nursery who took him to the vet to get scanned for a chip. She didn't see the accident but a parent did. The car was going so fast that she couldn't even get a number plate.

The nursery is the other side of the street that runs parallel to ours. We'd hoped he didn't cross that street (the houses across the road have very large, walled garden and we'd hoped they would be enough for his curiosity) as, unlike our (also wide and straight) street, it doesn't gave speed bumps and although it's a suburban street, there are lots of boy racers Angry.

However, boycat was a tart Grin and loved attention. Apparently he was well known at the nursery and all the kids loved him. So all he was doing yesterday was visiting for his attention-fix. If only he'd stayed at home and I'd had to hold him to stop following ds to school.

So sorry prettybird. I know nothing will help right now but he knew nothing but love and the grief is for those left behind. He is in peace now and wouldn't have suffered at the end.

We've lost countless cats to the road and it is utterly heart breaking.
