Tomorrow morning at 9.00 we will say goodbye to our darling Maisie. We know it's time, and we don't want her to suffer, but our hearts are breaking. She is 18 years old. When DH and I got married, we got three cats - she is the last one. Tomorrow there will be no animals in our house; I have never been without a pet before. My poor girl Sad.

Oh dear, she doesn't know though & it's a decision you haven't been forced into by fate.

She won't suffer and that's what I'd focus on. Inbetween sobbing and hand feeding her favourite foods.

Oh yes, the sobbing has already started. She's diabetic, so has had a restricted diet for the last 12 years. I've just given her a big handful of Dreamies, which were always strictly forbidden. She ate them all (slowly) and looked for more. I'm going to save some for later and tomorrow though.

Cats don't have foreknowledge. Enjoy the day with her.

Oh so sad for you. I dread this day.
You are being kind if you don't want her to suffer any longer. I hope you have had a day full of cuddles today and think of all the memories you have Flowers

Thank you all. She looks so frail and confused tonight - she's deteriorated so much in just a few days. I know we're doing the right thing by her, but God, it hurts. Sad

She's gone; she slipped away almost instantly. Lots of tears here, but I'm glad we didn't hang on until she was suffering. She looked so peaceful.

I'm sorry, how sad. What a lovely long life she had with you. Glad she looked peaceful. Someone posted on here ' better a day too soon than a day too late' wrt putting animals to sleep and it sounds like you did just the right thing at the right time.

I'm sorry for the loss of your lovely Maisie Flowers

They do slip away so gently, don't they? You can be very proud of yourselves that you did the right thing for her at the right time, before she was suffering. It's a hard decision, but the last, kindest one you can make.

What a long, happy life she had with you.

I'm so sorry .... my 18 year old went last month. I miss her so much, but you did the right thing. She would have been suffering x

Thank you everyone. Yes, she was quite a small cat. That picture is about 3 years old, so she was already around 15 then. Her weight plummeted in the last few weeks though - she was weighed last week, and was only 2.5kg. She was around 4.5kg at her healthiest. DH has to go to work now, he's worried about not holding it together. Sad

She was gorgeous. I'm so sorry for your loss. Our 19 year old cat was PTS just over a year ago. It was very quick and peaceful. (I felt awful though.) but the vet said she was ready and had clearly had enough.
It's awful when the house feels so empty though. Be kind to yourself.

Just seen your thread. I am so sorry for your lossFlowers
Have recently had to have my old girl pts, it is just horrible. I'm pleased yours slipped away peacefully, you can feel sure that you did the right thing by her. My girl struggled at the end, not the ending I would have chosen for her. Yours is at peace now. RIP dear puss.

Thank you so much to everyone who replied, and to all of you who have lost kitties too - I'm sorry for your losses. We were feeling a bit better today, then received a lovely card from our vet, with a painting on the front of a dog, cat and rabbit waiting at the Rainbow Bridge. Naturally, this made us both cry again. We both keep thinking we can hear her little claws tapping on the kitchen floor, which is hard to bear. I'm glad she's at peace, it's just the missing her which is so difficult.
